Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cadence & training

Last year I picked up a computer that reads cadence. Since I've always ridden by mph I have remained in the habit of using that and rarely go by cadence. Since I can't read both (I know, maybe I need a different unit) I am wondering if I will benefit more by gritting it out and ignoring the mph for a while. I am thinking if I start at, say, maintaining 75 - 80 rpm's I might find greater benefit on the overall?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

higher cadence is usually better- I shoot for 90+ optimum around 105-110. When you spin it's more of aerobic workout instead of grinding which tires your muscles out. Once you figure out how certain cadences feel, then you can simply switch over to speed and make sure you don't start grinding.
