Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quick one - Looking for advice on cheap training wheel

Have 3 wheelsets, PlanetX Pro Carbon 50 for racing, American Classic 420 and Mavic Kyrsium SSC (I rate them in that order for speed by the way with the PlanetX being number 1).

Of late though the mavics have developed a bit of play and the rear hub on the AM420's appears to be messed up, my local bike shop is crap so I am not holding out hope of them being repaired to good as new status and so I am looking for a set of cheap throwaway wheels that will take the punishment that Irish Roads throw and them and which I won't care about too much when they fall to pieces, mostly they will be used for training, but if they need to be raced, then I'd like to know if they would slow me down compared to my current wheelsets and if so how much ? (I know thats a total guessing game, anecdotal experience is what I am looking for)

Current candidates (I am looking at Factory builds only !!! Not interested in custom)

- Fulcrum Racing 5 Evo 07(1775g)
- Campag Vento 07(1755g)

These look like good training wheels to me.

You're welcome.

Both fine wheelsets. Mavic Askiums are also OK and cheap. Alternatively a pair of 32h handbuilts, say Open Pros on Ultegra hubs won't cost much more and will be much more rebuildable.

In terms of slowness, the 32h / cheap wheel option won't be much slower then the Ksyriums since it's aero not mass that matters. Also my experience of Mavic Cosmos versus CR420s is that the ride of the Cosmos is better.

Third option is to fix the AmClassic hub yourself. They are dead easy though to maintain. The only trick is not to overtighten them after putting in new bearings- to do it properly you need 2x 17mm cone spanners so that you can set the rear wheel play with the wheel clamped in the frame. A little bit of play doesn't hurt either. Probably the most satisfying option in the long run.

Indeed they do, full disks so good aerodynamics, but I wonder would the solid plastic tyres be a bit harsh on the local roads here ?

Thanks mr Fish, the bikeshop tell me that I need a 19mm cone spanner for the 420's. Do they use spurious parts ? American Classics are hard to come by here in Ireland, so if the parts are specific I would be in trouble. Its possible its the freehub/freewheel/cassette body whatever its called thats the problem, how serviceable are they ?

I've been really pleased with my Performance Titans. The set is only $130 right now.

The weight is around 1750g, and they have aero features - 27mm rims and low-count bladed spokes.

Durability remains a large question mark, although the guys at Performance said they didn't get an unusual amount of returns.

Why not Custom********** Plenty of builders around over this side of the water and just had a set of 105 hubs with Mavic CXP33's built up-- Bombproof training wheels that any GOOD LBS can retrue and retension- which is not not always the case with a fancy factory wheel.
