Clear coating a bare chromoly frame?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clear coating a bare chromoly frame?

Can a bare chromoly frame be simply clearcoted without paint? I haven't stripped the frame yet, what color are the brazes?

There have been some that have done it. Jamis did it to one of theirs models because it seemed like it had a layer of galvanizing done to it. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it unless some sort of layer of prtection is added, like a bluing salt, or a galvanizing of some sort.

You might want to decide that after you stripped the paint. Bare chromoly is not exactly very pretty. Some sort of surface treatment (polishing, brushed, bead blasted satin, etc.) might be necessary to pretty it up before clear coating makes esthetic sense.

Possible yes, but I don't think you'll like the result. Unless you are into industrial looks.

If its fillet brazed, the brazes will be bronze/brass color. If you have a lugged silver brazed bike, you shouldn't be able to see the silver (if its done right).

You are going to need to do a media blast or hand polish it or it will not look that great.
