Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+20 lbs overweight and can still do 20 miles!

Back on the bike (riding indoors for over a month) and did my first 20 today in a year and a half. Definitely alot slower than i was a year and a half ago and took almost two hours <sigh>. When i was lighter i was able to go 30 miles in an hour in a half. I guess that's what i get for getting fat...lol. Oh well - anyways it feels good to get back on the bike esp on a nice day like today. Just feels good to be back and reply back to this thread if you have good tips for steady weight loss and eating healthy. peace out.

Good for you. I've been losing weight over the past year (down 50 lbs, but still have about 20-25 lbs to go), so I totally understand where you are coming from. I'm still trying to build my bike stamina. I regularly do 15-20 miles in an hour to hour-and-a-half on my morning rides (2-3 a week, alternating with gym visits). I would like to get up to 30-40 miles at a time with some longer rides tossed in, but I find that I rarely have enough time to spend 2-3 hours riding and my current rides tire me out.

When I was a ladd, I remember a quote saying along the line: "a journey of 10,000 miles starts with the first step."

Keep riding and you will be back to your better self. I was fat once.......now I'm more like Evan Basso.

The problem with cycling is, that you're generally always 20lbs 'overweight'

Slow & steady with the weight loss. I started riding again last year after 15 years off, and was about 15 lbs over my old racing weight. I've now lost about 30 lbs total and am at the weight I should have been back when I was racing ! I should have lost weight way back then - maybe I would have done better.

I'm no expert on this, but here's what I did:

1) Cut back a bit here & there on the junk food. 2 cookies instead of 3, smaller bowl of ice-cream, 1 brownie instead of 2. I don't see any reason to cut out all the fun stuff

2) Drink more water. I started drinking water with a dash of lemon at home & work. I realized that sometimes when I was thirsty, I would eat something instead of drinking. Try various drinks to see what you like. Orange juice with seltzer, seltzer & other fruit juices. Most fruit juices are VERY sweet & sugary ... I cut them to at least 50% water if not more.

3) Get used to the feeling of hunger. Sometimes, I won't eat enough to satisfy my hunger pangs. Dampen them yes, but not completely fill myself up. Then, when I feel a bit hungry, recognize that the feeling is the feeling of you losing weight. Then go get a big low-cal drink instead.

4) Tighten your belt a notch .... that will discourage you from pigging out if it's tight already.

5) Don't deprive yourself too much. I try to cut back during the week, then cut myself some slack on the weekends. I think going "cold-turkey" and being too ascetic will backfire after a while. I'm close to my target now, and want to hold it for a while.

6) Lots of fresh fruit. Fill up on healthy stuff first, then when the junk food comes out, you'll already be full.

You will find that your speed will increase faster than your weight will decrease.

My redneck uncle gave me a few encouraging words that helped himself, me and now possibly YOU loose weight.

True story I saw him after about a year, I noticed he thinned out quite a bit. I said how did you loose so much weight?

(Pay attention now this is a long story) his answer was this.........

I QUIT EATING!!..............

Good stuff indeed - appreciate all of the comments. Homebrew - love the tips esp the tightening the belt - its funny but sooo true - nothin like whippin the stomach down to size..lol. Seriously, though you are right you cant completely "diet" otherwise whats the point? Besides, riding long now gives me a perfect excuse for MORE pasta meals
