Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What speed for a work out

I have heard that in a pack 20mph to 22mph is about average on a long ride. I am riding anywhere from 10-30 miles and want to know if 16.5mph to 18mph is about average, riding solo?

No one can say for sure because we don't know your terrain. It might or might not be fast.

Get ready with your flame suit though.

264 mph would be best for a workout...make that 265 if you have guads like Ryanf

Seriously though, what ovoleg said.

You're going to get hundreds of diff responses to the subjective term "Average". Avg speeds don't tell you squat when it comes to workout intensity.

But, I'll oblige:
On average, my solo rides of 30-70 miles I average around 20mph on rolling terrain. From 70 to 100, it drops to around 18mph. 100+ miles, I've never bothered calculating my avg speed (I don't ride with a computer anymore...loving the 'freeness' of not obsessing over numbers that don't mean anything to me anymore).

But again, this can't be compared to any others unless we're both riding the same route, in the same conditions. example: I'd probably be lucky to avg 15mph over the same distances in Colorado.

Solo, I'd say about 24mph is average...

Unless you're doing a flat ride.

I kid! I kid! But there really is no valid average workout speed. It depends on your fitness and goals. If you're happy with your speed, then you're fine. If you're not, ride harder.

T'ain't speed, it's perceived effort.

If you feel that you're working hard and you can't carry on a conversation, but can only get a few words out at a time, you're probably doing enough to get a good workout. But long rides (2/3 hours) at a steady, comfortable pace will also develop your base fitness. Get one or two or those in per week for a few weeks and then start with the harder efforts.

If you want to look into it further, there are plenty of books on Ebay on basic cycle training or you may find them in a (good) local bookstore.

Some packs can average 30mph for hours at a time.

That's about what I do, though I tend to do 30-40 mile rides, but the same ball park and on reasonably flat terrain I average in the 16 to 18 range. However.....I've only been riding about 2 years, I am way overweight, and I was 65 last January.

I'm new to road biking. Been mountain biking since college. First thing I did with my new bike was put a computer on it. On a flat road I'm about 20 mph average. But I really think it's because of heavy squats and deadlifts. I am light years from being a biking guru, but I definately think weight training helps. And when it comes to weights, if you aren't doing squats and deadlifts, you are wasting your time.

I see this was a broad question. However, my question has been answered. Thank you

lots of long hills in big gears.....speed never enters my mind. I generally conventrate on heart rate and the distance I put in. I took the computer off the bike like a lot of other guys....I enjoy the freedom just to pedal as I wish ( From one Starbucks to another)
