Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

upper body workout during peak riding season...

my gf lately told me that i have lost most of my mass from the winter gym workouts i was doing. she even said "when i hug you its like hugging a women"!! usually i just ride all spring/summer/fall and then hit the gym for weights all winter.

what do you all do in the riding season to keep your upper body strength and bulk?

I think a balance of upperbody exercises with cycling is very important.

Do core work, pushups, situps, crunches, planks, etc. I do not lift during racing season, but do core work 3-4 x a week.

if the new GF thing doesnt work out then its time for some CORE work. once or twice a week for 60 minutes will do the trick. push ups, pull ups, tri dips, the plank, and so on. all can be done at home at any time. later.

Get a fat suit. Then it'll be like hugging a trash bag full of Reese's peanut butter cup wrappers.

You can skip the core workouts and go straight to therapy.

I'm new to road biking and really love it. If you want to keep what you have gained, you need to eat a lot of clean foods (not junk!) and still lift weights. You need to do deadlifts and squats. I have said it before, if you aren't doing squats and deadlifts in the gym then you are waisting your time. Since I just started looking at some cycling magazines I have noticed the stick arms on some of the riders. But to answer your question; stay with the weights, maybe full body workouts 2 days a week and eat a ton of clean foods.

Just make sure she knows that the bike is more important than her and she'll quit her whining.

awww I think they were just being protective of you because she said hugging you was like hugging a woman..
Id just explain to her that this is how you are at peak riding season and that your body will bulk up again and that you too will be understanding of her when she might put on a few pounds.
If you have a good relationship like you say you two have, than this shouldnt be anything to worry about

Well at least you don't have man boobs. Then it'd be like hugging a chick. I do lat pulldowns, triceps and shoulders or biceps 1x week. And then core work like situps etc.
