Dude, most of us are in the same situation. I reckon 90% of BF members couldn't afford the bike they want. I certainly can't.
Don't worry, its normal.

The funny thing about money is,
the more you have, the more you want.
The more you want, the more you need.
10-15 years ago,
I would have never considered spending big $$$ on a road bike.
Now, $2000 for a set of wheels seems very reasonable,eh?

I have never been allowed to spend more than $1000 on a bicycle, and I used to race on the national level. You learn to buy used, clearance, freebies, or whatever you can get your hands on.

My bike cost me $800, because that is what I could afford. The nice thing is that it is an $1800 bike that I got a good deal on.

There's a reason my race bike is a Trek 1500, I gots no money. Of course, now that I'm established in the local community my next bike is going to be a CDale team CAAD9.

To get my new bike I worked overtime for 3 month in the off season and cut back on other spending. Wasn't that hard really.

My money goes towards tuition. So, though I may *technically* have over $5,000, I don't really.
Ride your bike fast and then you don't have to buy bikes! I got handed a Felt this year, and built it up with the slush fund (cash from mowing lawns) and things I already had.

for $1600.00 you can get a bike which has performance capability which probably exceeds your performance ability.... until you are better than the bike you have no reason to complain...
and we all pretty much wish we had more money for better gear... heck, I'm saving up money for stink-free water bottles... those will make my rides much more enjoyable...

$1600 sounds good to me. I bought a slightly used Cannondale with Campy Chorus & Record, and Kyserium wheels for $1000. It seems like a pretty good bike to me, and I finish ahead of most of the guys around here ....... I could use slightly lighter wheels for racing, but I don't have an extra $600 or more under my matress right now.

I'm in the position of deciding if I want to save for what I want....(will take a bit longer) or to save for what I need. Since I'm new to this, I'm sure I'll not notice a big difference between a 1200.00 bike or a 800.00 bike. I'm sure the components of either will far outshine those I'm pedaling now on some old steel ten speed that takes forever to change gears. I'll keep researching.

I just paid off my credit card debt. I was paying $2k a month on it to get rid of it. Took me almost a year to pay it off. Now I have to work on paying the $100k I owe for school (and I am going back) and the $22k I owe on my car. I am never going to buy things that I cannot afford immediately ever again. Except, obvious when I finance a house, but I am not going to buy a house that will cost me too much more than my rent.
