Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale Goodwill Find $50

My next door neighbor just called me and said he was at a local goodwill. I always told him to keep an eye out for bikes and such. Anyhow, he said that he had a Cannondale QR900, really lite and looks to be in nice shape. Tires where flat but it had to be worth that.

So, I was in the car and had no access to the internet to see if I could find this "qr" version. I had to make a quick choice and the only thing I could to to check the age was to see what kind of components it had. I asked him to find the shifter, Knowing he wouldnt be able to if it had brifters so he said, I only see brakes lol. I said does it have writing on the tops? He said, yea, shimano flight deck. I said just go ahead and buy it. Ill pay you tonight.

This has to be a 2000 or up bike right? I mean, its goodwill and they want $50 for a bike. Thats unheard of right?

Ive yet to see it but I had to take a chance. It may be a diamond in the rough then it may be a complete turd. Also, I couldnt find a "qr" 900, rather all I found was a r900 which Im familiar with. He later said that it had sora components.

Ill keep posted.

fingers crossed.

Anyhow, good luck, hope it's a great (or in this case INSANE) buy!

Strange. Sora shifters would indicate post-2000. But Sora would not be stock on a "900-level" bike.

My guess is that's its a pretty old R900 that someone updated with some new Sora stuff. Who knows? A bargain for 50 bucks for sure.

It's a head shock. That is one fine bike. And I ought to know, I have the 52cm twin. It probably had 7 speed originally like mine, and someone upgraded to 8 speed. I did the same with used Ultegra 8 speed. It has a VERY short wheel base. The headshock provides a great ride and handles potholes, breaks in pavement similiar to an off road bike. The only downside is a stiff rear frame that has very little flex. Not advisable if you have a bad back. The #1 reason that bike has great resale is the headshock. The last two I saw on ebay went for about $500 each. They were both white, SR500's. No way you'll get that kind of money breaking it up. Best of luck with it. The pic below is old when I picked mine up used, now it has a new stem, clipless and a Sella saddle, but no new pic.

Nice bike.

You should go back to the goodwill shop and give them more money, they clearly didn't know how to price it...

I put an adjustable stem on mine. Cost about $60 installed at the Bicycle Chain near Raleigh. You HAVE to deal with a Cannondale dealer to get a replacement stem, but the good news is, MTB stems are supposed to work on these bikes. I still have my old stem. Let me measure it, if it's smaller than yours, I'll PM you.

I gave my neighbor $50 plus $15 for Gas. I was shocked when hit came in. It was dark and he was carrying it on his shoulder. All I had to do was look at the unlit contours and I new that I had made a nice decision. You could just tell.

Im so pumped. Im gonna try to ride it. It may be to big but I might keep it for friends to ride with me.

This rules!
