Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Most expensive cycling mistakes

What's the most expensive cycling-related mistake you've ever made? Left the bike in the overhead carrier going into the garage? Backed the car up over your dream bike? Come on - make my day.

Dropped my 30 some pound tandem from the ceiling of my garage onto it's back wheel a little sideways. Can you say Taco wheel. This was back when I used a hoist to hang it up and out of the way.

Stripped the threads on a derailleur hanger that wasn't replacable.

Bought at least 6 saddles and not found one comfy enough for a century.

Hopefully this streak stops here.

Went way too fast intoa turn and slid across the road with my bike cartwheeling over my head.

Left my bike leaning against the back of a 10 ton truck...

Some time later, the owner of said truck backed up over my bike. It was a cheap bike, but still, that one hurt. Bent the frame right down the middle.

Remember to check your chain for bad links....Trek bought the new frame, I paid for the other parts, and labor.

Tried to true my own wheel when I was 14, not knowing what I was doing.

Egg shaped wheels don't ride well.

My weight weenie bike fell over once, and put a ding in my Rolf Prima Elan wheels. They are $900 a set. I still ride it, but will replace it eventually.

Put off changing my chain for 3 weeks. (It broke one week in, latest tally of medical bills… $12,473.00 with more to come.) I did find BF as a result; Dr. said it would help pass the time to find a Blog! Good move Doc!

Left the garage door open once and my first road bike - a Centurion Ironman - was stolen.
