Driving bike first before ride
How many people here load their bike in their car or truck and drive several miles first, then unload and bike...?

Depends on the day, and depends on the ride. Some days - like earlier today - I just don't feel like dealing with traffic. Those are the days that I drive to the nearest MUP.

Hardly ever. 99% of the time (including a handful of races) I just ride to the ride.

When I need to...not sure what 'several miles' would be...
...as opposed to riding to every event?

I take my bike to work on top of my car 4-5 days a week. Often, the best opportunity I have for a ride is at lunch, on an 18 mile loop south of my office on rolling county roads.

I did that this past weekend because I wanted to ride in the mountains. I drove approx. 160 kms (about 2 hours) and rode from there. I'll do that once in a while so I can ride in different areas, with other cyclists, or for events. The furthest I've driven for a cycling event was about 5000 kms.
In the winter I'll occasionally drive anywhere between about 20 - 100 kms up the road to where I know the highways are cleared of snow, so I can ride without having to wade through a whole heap of snow.
But if "several miles" still puts me in my local area, and if it isn't the middle of winter, no I can't be bothered to drive.

I do both, it all depends on where I want to ride that day. I would say about 50/50, toting bike to riding from home. I live pretty close to the Cleveland Metroparks, so I often just ride down to the nearest one, but one of my goals this summer is to ride every mile of the Metropark system, so I load the bike on the car and drive to one of the east side parks and then ride.

Typically ride from home to the bicycle shop where we all do our business. The vast majority of our club rides originate at the shop. Mostly racers and ex-racers are in the crew.

It depends on the location and time of day. There are certain routes I train on that require going through a bad intersection to get there. If it;s around bad commute hours I'll drive to the route.

Sometimes I get sick of hills, hills, hills, so I'll drive to a flat area I like and have at it!

And when I lived in Manitoba I got sick of flat, flat, flat, so I drove to hilly areas to have at it.

If it's just me throwing one bike on the car? No biggie. But I just got back from a family vacation and had to pack and unpack four bikes at every stop. Aghhhhh!!!!! No thank you.

If my wife and I have to go into town (which is quite a distance 40KM or so) I take my bike with me and when we are done running our errands I off load my bike and bike home from there and she takes the vehicle. It's a great way to try different routes, get things done in a day and still fit in a great ride.

I used to load and unload to commute to work. Now that I'm stronger I just ride from home. On the weekends, I'm lucky enough to have bought a home where if I want to do some climbing all I have to do is turn right and have at it. If I want a mostly flat ride I'll turn left. If I want both I'll just ride all over the place.

I live on top of a 'mountain' 1.5 miles from the pavement...
I ride down on my mountain bike but you would never make on skinny tires...
I drive to the bottom with the road bike in the back...

I get around by bike every day. The last thing I want to do when going for a ride is spend more time in traffic. Not to mention a lot of really nice routes are an hour or more away by car, ranging from Sonoma to Gilroy. The car is a hassle, but well worth it.

Except for races (even then, I generally carpool), hardly ever. Our club rides start about 7 miles from the house, so I just ride to the ride start and back. The only time I drive to the start of a club ride is if it's bad weather and I'm not riding. I'm the ride leader, so if it's raining, and I'm not leading, I'll just show up to say "Good Luck!" to the stalwarts and then head inside the coffee shop for a cup of hot java.
