Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nashbar Changes Charge without Warning

So I ordered a messenger bag from Nashbar the other day. Final charge was $41.99. However, when they charged my account they charged me $42.35. I called them to ask why and they told me, because their website has not been figuring out taxes properly. Of course when you are spending small amounts it won't probably be that big of a deal, but what if I were to spend $1500 and that is all I had in my account? Anyway, I wanted to give others a heads up. I am not exactly happy with what happened, but it is less than a dollar.

You shouldn't be charged tax at all unless Nashbar has a brick and mortar store or warehouse in your state.

- email or call and have the charge refunded to your account/card (if you're not liable for the tax)...

- this is disturbing however... Nashbar also no longer sends me an email when an order ships, and the Web site's "database" seems unavailable...

(i simply check my cc account on-line to see when Nashbar charges my order - usually when it ships - if that ever changes to 'when ordered,' Nashbar will lose my business...)

i stopped doing business with nashbar a long time ago...

when they shipped my order via parcel post when I PAID FOR EXPEDITED, refused to refund me the money on the grounds that "I couldn't prove they hadn't" (it took a week and a half to get to me...to WV FROM OHIO!!!!!!.), the woman on the phone was rude, and the manager I asked to speak to was even ruder....

nashbar can DIAF

I already called them and is how I knew what happened. They said they are working on the issue, however there was no offer to reimburse the difference. Since it was so little I didn't concern my self too much. I do feel that is shoddy business.

Oh, I checked my bank account to see the charge and that is when I noticed something was up. I had two pending charges; one for $41.99 and one for $42.35. So I thought I was being charged for two orders; one that I didn't even make. Come to find out the problem was that they changed the charge.

What's really interesting is that Performance owns Nashbar.

Actually, unless i'm mistaken, I think if you have a Performance store in your state, you also pay tax on Nashbar orders?

I'm in Texas, and didn't pay tax on Nashbar orders last year (at least I don't remember it), but this year after Performance opened up, taxes started showing up on my Nashbar orders.

Incorrect. Shops may choose to collect sales tax on items even if they don't have a physical location in that state. Of course, if they do that, they legally have to send that tax to the state the item was sent to.

Furthermore, if an online retailer does not charge you tax, you are personally responsible for calculating your local tax and paying it to the government yourself. It's obviously not enforced, but it's in the books.

I stopped shopping at Nashbar a while ago for much the same reason. They fudge the numbers to charge you more. I was charged tax on the full price before discounts and it took several calls before they agreed that this was the case and gave me a refund. I was also charged tax on the shipping. I was told that since shipping is a service they must charge tax, which I think is totally illegal as they do not provide the actual shipping service and whatever shipping tax is already rolled into the cost of shipping from FedEx, UPS or USPS.

Anyway, add in the now frequent jacking up of prices before/during "sale" events and it is really a sleazy place to buy from.

- it looks like, along with the recent Web site change, that Nashbar has also changed its charge policy...

- my worst fear has been realized: my cc was charged immediately today upon ordering, and not to be upon shipping (this was *not* the case less than two weeks ago when i placed my last order)...

- ah well, nashbar, it was fun while it lasted!

I had no problem with them till recently I ordered (2) 50% off Garneau shorts only to receive a pair of socks in a mismarked bag and the other pair is discontinued. The online order let me aorder and was confirmed as (2) pair. I will just support my LBS and buy the best for full price from now on, it's not worth the hastle.

I had a funny one happen with them too. I ordered shorts and a jersey. Everything shows up fine on the website. My invoice that got emailed to me shows charged for both, but only has one item listed... so then when I get the order it has the one item and the charge for that item. So I call them pretty upset because I ordered both because I needed them for a ride that weekend, and I paid expediated shipping to get them both. They basically told me too bad.

Had a friend who had the same type problem with Performance. He ordered two carbon cages and got one cage and one womens jersey?!?!

I stopped buying from Nashbar because they had a pair of liners on there as tights. I got them and sent them back, and told them to refund the shipping and they refused. It is only a couple of bucks, and it cost them my business. And I bought stuff from Nashbar for 15 years, before they even had a website.

Once a retailer loses my business, they cannot get it back.

I recently sent a Blackburn floor pump that had an air leak to exchange for a Topeak Joe Blow Sport.. That was about 3weeks ago and i haven't heard/seen that they've done the exchange... phone calls don't help.. no one knows anything...

I also made a $80 order from performance and 1/2 the order "shipped" on the 7/3 and still hasn't gotten here.. the other 1/2 was backordered adn shipped today..

I think from now on i think i'll buy from LBS and just settle for paying a little bit more to get what i want right now..

this really grinds my gears...

I have also experienced Nashbar quoting one price and then charging my CC a different price. I had bought a pair of wheels and chose expedited shipping. I went through the checkout procedure and received an e-mail confirming my order. After I received my order, the invoice showed that shipping was $20 more than the website had quoted and what my e-mail said. If I had known this, I absolutely would not have chosen expedited shipping. $20 is not a small chunk of change in my book. I called Nashbar, and the person on the phone was extremely rude and at first refused to fix the situation. After 30 minutes of discussion, I was refunded $10 of the $20 overcharge. That was 3 years ago; I've never bought anything from Nashbar since.

I agree.

I was charged for a "free" shipping, from what I read in this forum, this is VERY common. And true to Nashbar fashion, it took two weeks.

So no more Nashbar for me.
