Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is certainly something to think about if you live where the air isn't good. I'm not in the habit of considering air quality when I ride; perhaps I should be.

Imagine seeing a group of riders...30 strong fully decked out on white bikes, in white/silver team kits..with a dude in a black version leading out of the saddle...I wonder if this thing has a little amplifier in it to amp the sounds of breathing?

something im assuming we've all contemplated before? I know I have. Landscaping/construction trucks, busses, diesel fumes on the morning commute.. it definitely sucks.

but Ive got friends who smoke cigs..and dont exercise. So we're still doing better than these people by far!

Regardless, I'm glad I don't live in what I'd term an urban area. Not quite out in the boondocks, but far enough out that the air still smells fresh, a 5 minute RIDE brings you to beautiful farmland, etc.

I hate the city. Too bad I have to work in it 5 days a week.

I ride because I enjoy it. Any health benefits are secondary, and health risks from the pollution wont stop me doing it.

Sometimes in winter we get these cold air inversions. It's usually below 0*f for about a week solid and clear but the smog gets trapped at ground level making the horizon brown. On my commute home there's a steep hill that bridges over a freeway trench (Franklin over I-94 for the locals). If I pound up that hill during one of those days I can feel it by the top. Ick.
