Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Am I da only 1 with Specialized tires prolems?

I put a $20 tire on one of my roadies to use as a training tire. I put maybe 500 miles on it before I noticed a big chunk of rubber missing. The thread showing thru was maybe 2 inches long right on the center of the tire. I chalked it up to being a cheapie!

Then I placed a better model on the roadie I use for organized rides. I don't ride it as much as my beater bike. Figure I'd save the more expensive tires for events. The tire was a $40 model that a friend had rec'd. I have less than 600 miles on it and guess what? Good guess, a chunk of rubber missing. Zactly like the other tire. Looks as if I skidded down a mtn @40 mph for 50 yards! This model is a folding Specialized S-Works Mondo.

I am 230 but never had problems with Continentals, $10-30 models. Last time I listen to a friend!

Try a WTB Camino. Decent grip, but they wear like iron. I have almost 2000 miles on 1 pair and they almost look new. Continentals are also OK for a cheap training clincher that wears slowly.

I wasn't the one who recommended the tire, was I? I don't use them now, but I had good luck with Specialized tires. I had a set of Mondo S-Works that I used problem-free (including no flats) on my climbing wheelset for about 2000 miles. There's still plenty of life in the tires, but I decided to swap them out because I liked my Vittoria open tubulars on my other wheelset. Before the Mondo S-Works, I was using a pair of Mondo Pros that was pretty problem free, though I did flat that set twice over fields of glass.

Nope, wasn't you! Or I'd be sending you the bill!

I, in fact, did skid down going 30 mph for about 30 yards on mondo tires. Now i don't need to tell you that each skid is different, but my tires have only small areas where the abrasion is visible.

Yeah, I've noticed no two skid marks are ever the same!

Nope. If you go over to RBR, most of the reviews of specialized bikes diss the tires. Mine certainly does, at least. I have specialized mondo pros, and have had a decent number of flats, flat spots from relatively low speed skids, etc. Should have switched them off at around 800 miles, but I'm still running them on the bike at 1200 just because I've been too lazy/busy to deal with it.

Thanx, I'm actually glad to hear that. The guy that suggested them had several problems with them. He's about my weight though, so wasn't sure about the rest of the population. I wish people would save their reviews and recs till they have atleast a few hundred miles on the product!

I weigh in at 183-185 these days, so I would imagine that at 230 their problems would be exacerbated.

Why not buy tires from a tire specialist- which is certainly NOT Specialized?

You really don't have to do this. And for gods sake don't post any pictures!

It seems that I see continental 4000 grand prix tires everywhere I look in Houston. They are very popular. If you shop the internet, you can get them for $38-$42 per tire and shipping is a few dollars. Local shops sell them for up to $65 each (???!!!???).

I had pretty good service out of the specialized pro tires that came on my bike (Specialized Roubaix), but they sure don't roll like the Continentals!

My Specialized Allez Sport came with Mondo tires. After 1800 miles a patch of rubber the size of a US quarter dollar was missing on the rear tire and allowing the cords to show. I ride a lot on chip sealed asphalt, so it is a rough surface. During most of the miles I have accumulated my weight was around 215 pounds. I have new Armadillos on the bike now. (I am not out for speed as much as a good workout and some weight loss, so if they give me some inherent speed reduction, it is not a big problem.)

If anyone wonders what a chip seal road surface is, they spray the road with tar and apply a layer of fine gravel. In time traffic and the sun push the gravel down to make a smooth surface, except in areas where traffic is relatively light. Think of 40 grit sandpaper under a magnifying glass.
