Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Favorite Tape?

I so fired up over my new Deda bar tape I had to post this.
If you like a not-so-squishy, not-so-stretchy, dense, thick tape, look no further. Huge improvement over the Cinelli Gel Cork (IMO). Plus, it's cheap and it went on super easy, too.

SOmewhat off-topic, but I absolutely SUCK at putting new tape on. I always get that one part around the bend in the bars where a part that is supposed to be under the next ring pokes out over. It drives me nuts, but I'm too ashamed to take it to the bike shop and have them do it. I only add this, because I just replaced my bar tape and thought I had finally done a perfect job. But, no, I had that one little part sticking out. Grrrrr

Deda carbon-look tape

I like the texture and it looks good with my PF RS frame.

I recently bought some Fizik gel tape and that stuff sucks. The gel is a pain to keep in place while wrapping. The tape has no stretch at all so when pulling it tight I felt like I was going to tear it. Plus it made my bars feel fat.

It's a close one for me. Cinelli cork (non-gel) is the gold standard. But then I got some of the silver Deda tape and it's really nice: easy to wrap, not at all squishy, and surprisingly unslippery.

Edit: I posted without seeing the above post. I want credit for an original thought!!!

2nd Edit: Oh well, the *** should be "***", which must be an offensive term to some since the software censors it! My apologies.

3rd Edit: LOL! I stupidly posted my 2nd edit thinking I could type out what the *** represents, and the censor caught me again. So I'll try again: A Z Z. (Are you blushing???)

Yup, Cinelli. That brown tape strip is the give away. By the way, when I get to the lever, I loop it around the top so that it reverses the direction of the wrap. That way, when your hands are on the tops, your natural tendency to pull tightens the wrap rather than loosens it.

you can loop around the lever and "X" wrap the tape as needed.. i find tape length is more than adequate to do this. no need to keep wrapping in the same motion

None of the above...

Novara (REI brand) gel tape... $12... this stuff is great. 1 wrap is equivalent to about 1-1/2 wraps of cinelli cork and is ten thousand times more comfortable. The white stays white for a while too without even cleaning (unless you're a total slob, then you're on your own ).

Leather tape is best. I couldn't justify spending 60$ on brooks leather tape as nice as it might be. The next best thing is to find an old and soft leather jacket from the thrift store. Cut it into lengths and wrap, electric tape off and do a few wraps. The cutting of the strips is tedious but worth the effort. Cinelli Gel tape is crap. IMO it is way too expensive for the full list price. There is a much more comfortable feeling using old leather than any other tape that I have tried. The trick is finding a soft enough grade of leather with a proper die/protective coat.

One thrift coat can do 3-5 bars.

That's how I pretty much wrap it, except starting on the top of the bar two inches away from the stem, and REALLY stretch it.
