How rare is my Allez?
Need help finding info on a late eighties steel frame Specialized Allez "Jim Berg"(I think that's what the script says) Special Edition.
I just picked up the bike last week and have scoured the internet for info on this bike and whoever "Jim Berg" is and have come up completely empty-handed.
I do know it's a racing bike and goes superfast, I do know it's Shimano SIS 600 equiped, and is still in beautiful original condition...beyond that I'm at a total loss.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Wasn't Jim Berg a domestic racing champion in the early 80s?

I've never heard of him but judging by the stripes on the bike I would say he was a world champion.

Rare enough to be worth $350.

Jim Berg is one of the "Duct tape guys". Are those stripes "battleship grey" and approx 4 inch across by any chance?

i've got one just like it. mine a 56cm and it has stickers on the front of each fork leg that spell out specialized vertically. i think the stickers were used around the time that that pos movie 'american flyers' came out. the creators of the movie asked a bunch of racers to do a group ride with the actors in the movie to try to teach them how to ride in a group. i remember riding with kevin costner but i don't remember much else.
i believe jim berg was the designer of the frame.

Took me forever to figure out how to pronounce Allez when I got mine. Stupid french.
Oh, and to answer the question:
Who cares? If you like it, ride it. If you don't, put it on eBay and see what it brings.

It's a nice mid level road bike. Mass produced by Specialized so not very rare. Nice bike, still very serviceable but not a rare collectors item.
Go to Classic and VIntage forum for more info.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but, you guy's got this one all wrong. The name on the left chainstay is Jim Merz and he's a brilliant builder held in the highest regard by the best builders there are. If memory serves, Jim Merz was brought on board Specialized to revamp the 'team' frames segment and brought on names like 3-rensho to build their best stuff, after, that is, he made a few frames himself.
So yeah, it's rare and it does have some significant historical value. Once Jim Merz becomes more widely known, it's value will appreciate greatly.

the problem is that specialized makes their money selling to a mass market, not the bouquet market. the mass market does not see a steel bike as a high end state of the art machine. the mass market wants trick tubing and lightweight bling. most of the steel bikes that specialized built were considered enty to mid level.

Jim Merz made custom steel frames in Portland, before working for Specialized.
His specialty was touring frames, a friend of mine has one of his bikes, it's a beauty and the ride is super nice.
Allez are not rare but I bet there aren't too many Merz made ones out there.
Looks like a nice bike, enjoy!
