Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Assos bibs

Are they worth the money? I found a pair on amazon/bikesomewhere.com that are only $80, which surprised me, since I thought Assos were like a minimum of $150 - $200 for any of their products.

Second question: anybody have info on Assos sizing? According to bikesomewhere.com, I would need to buy a XXL size, which seems very odd to me, since I am 6'3". However, I am a very slender 6'3", so I am skeptical as to whether these will fit or not... any advice, other than that I should check them out at a LBS? (None of the stores in my city sell Assos)

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, they are well worth the money. As far as sizing, not sure.....I'm 5'7", 145 pounds and wear a medium. I've also heard of people a few inches taller than me and also skinny who can wear a medium as well. Perhaps someone around your height/weight that has a pair can chime in.

Thanks for the info, GuitarWizard! That makes me feel a little bit better about maybe buying an XL instead of a XXL, which I think would be way too big. Also, I checked out the sizing on Assos' site, and it looks like they have my height shown as fitting either XL or XXL, so that helps.

I checked that site and the only Assos that is priced at $76 are Assos Men's S-Series Cycling Shorts, everything else is $154-200+, normal pricing.

I'm 6'2" 200 and have Assos F.I. Mille in XL, my Pearl Izumi Ultrasensor's are L and my Santini Fluid Twist Gel are XL... for comparison. I also have Performance Ultra's in L. They are all bib shorts.

The $80 Assos are not the ones everyone raves about. From what I understand, they are fine but not necessarily better than any other $80 MSRP short. They have the same chamois design as the regular expensive Assos but have a simpler panel design and are made in Hungary, not Italy. FWIW the Performance Ultra bibs I use also have a similar chamois, but I would not assume that they are "as good as" $200 Assos bibs

Thanks a ton for that comparison. The only pair of shorts I currently have are the cheapest Pearl Izumi available, and they are in XL, so they are a tad big for me.

I've heard that bibs are the way to go, and I had heard good things about Assos, so I thought I'd jump on the $80 bargain I saw.

Thanks for that information. I didn't realize they were made in a different place. The Performance Ultra bibs seem like a great deal... maybe I'll look into those.

That reminds me of the three Castelli Kiss bibs I own, which are also made in Hungary. Same factory perhaps?

The S-series bibs are not made by Assos but a company in Hungary.. The do have the nice assos style chamois. I bought a pair a couple of years ago.. They are good bibs for the money but they have a very short inseam, take this into consideration.. They are cut a little more generous than standard assos bibs..

So if you are an XXL assos size, go with the XL S-series..

I recently pick up a pair off ebay. I'm 6'3" (180lbs) and went with the XLG. Length is perfect. Initially they seemed a bit baggy but when I am on the bike they tighten up. Were they worth $200; I honestly can't say. No chaffing, however, and the Castelli's they replaced were beginning to really tear up my rear.

Very good info to have. I'm not sure if I am willing to plop down $200 for shorts, but we'll see... Strangely, we are pretty much the exact same build... I weigh 185 though... hehe.

Wore my Pearl Izumi's today, missed my Assos. Might try the FI.équipe bibs, if you are looking for a cheaper option.

If your going to buy assos you should go for the FI 13 S2 bibshorts, nothing short of the best.

Otherwise save your money and buy a more affordable brand.

Bought myself the Assos FI Mille bibs (in red) for my birthday recently, with matching jersey (short sleeve, red), gloves (fingerless, red), and socks (white/black). Love them. They're extremely comfortable and feel very lightweight and breathable, great for hot summer rides. They're now easily my favorite choice of clothing for a long ride.

~140 pounds, 5'8", size small bibs and jersey, size medium gloves, size I socks.

Well, it's looking like I'll save the purchase of some Assos products until I have a bit more money... hehe. Until then, I think I'll likely pick up some Performance Ultra bibs.

I like my Ultras - surprised they make 10 panels frankly.

Just how much better are the Assos in your opinion? As much as the $120 difference?

Thanks for the tip. I don't have any plans to order from them right now, seeing as how Performance and Nashbar have taken care of me so far.
