Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tucson Rides

I'm looking for a group that rides in Tucson. I am a beginner rider, but am taking it pretty seriously. I want to get with a group that goes out regularly and can help me figure out the best places to ride.

Let me know what you think.

There are more rides in Tucson that you can ever imagine. And I don't even live there. Check out your local bike shop.

There are plenty of great group rides in Tucson, but they're vicious. If you're not experienced in pack riding, i'd stay away from the faster ones until you feel confident. There are fast rides Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday (the shoot-out) that leave from the Starbucks on University. I believe they leave at 5:30am or 6 right now. You should visit Fairwheel bikes and ask them about rides. I think Sabino cycles also has a ride. Just visit shops and ask them, as they'll have the most current info. Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions.

Here is a nice resource, the Tucson Bike Maps, whic hyou can get at any of the many bike shops. My sister lives near Ina Road, and I always see a good amount of riders there, around the foothills. Plus there seems to be some of the Best Gelato around there (Frost) so you can cool off

For now I live in Central (near Speedway and Campbell). I'm in the process of buying a house and come September will be living near Kolb and Broadway.

I've contacted the Desert Foxes and am hoping to get involved with them. I've found some maps of rides from GABA, but they seem pretty experienced and I'm a little intimidated. I need to start out small and build up my confidence.

Let me know if you have any advice.
Thanks.

when you move further East, you should ride from Kolb down to 22nd, then head further East towards Old Spanish trail, take it down to Saguaro National Park and ride the loop there. it's a nice ride early in the morning when there's no traffic, and it's very scenic. just be careful on the first downhill, it's steep and there's a sharp right turn, if you miss it, you'll crash into cactus.

Yeah, that is a fabulous ride! Unbelievably gorgeous scenery, and a pleasantly challenging ride full of twisty windy descents and a long gentle climb.

First time we tried it my wife crashed into a cactus!
