Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Did something bad today.

I went to the new Performance store today, where the entire sales staff knows NOTHING about bikes and parts and when up to the ditziest looking girl working.

Girl: "Hi! Can I help you with anything?"
Me: "Yeah, I need a jockey pulley to a 1963 Simplex rear changer. Prefferably in grey. Oh and also three springs to a 1999 Campy Centaur special edition grey front derailleur. Thanks."
Girl: (completely overwhelmed with excess information about things she never knew existed) "Umm, I'll go get [mechanic]."

The girl actually got yelled at in the back room after the mechanic talked to me. As I was looking at their bike I heard some yelling and looked through the door to the back room and saw them.

I almost feel bad. Hopefully this gets to Performance and they hire people who know what they're doing.

Why did she get yelled at? She wasn't able to help you so she got someone that could. Sounds like to me she did you a favor... The fact that she had no bleeding idea that you were talking about bike parts is beside the point, IMO.

Man I hope you capitalized on this testosterone burst by pounding some old guy on a 10 year old Trek during your ride home.

The one up on Sawmill? I hate that place. With all the good bike shops in Columbus, Performance sticks out like a sore thumb.

Almost sold a bike to a guy with one on it at the bike co-op tonight. It's boxy and old looking with red "Simplex" in retro font.

Also

Those pulley's never came in gray.

Wouldn't it have been more effective to send Performance feedback via their web site, instead of starting a thread to slam the store and an employee who tried to help rather than simply saying, "Oh we don't have that" and walking away?

Hey bonehead, some day maybe you'll be allowed to reproduce and have a daughter who will be treated as you did her. Look forward to it. There's a jerk born every minute just like you.

This is from my SO:

I worked at a Performance store in San Diego back in the late '90's (store number 40, for any trolls from Performance). The district manager, a 40-something who tried in vain to dress like a 20 year old prostitute (she got the prostitute part right), told me point blank that they (Performance) didn't like and usually refused to hire people with bike shop experience because they were "shiftless and lazy". The reality is that Performance absolutely HATES being told when they're wrong. The fastest way to get on corporates sh*t list was to call them up and tell them when they were doing something stupid. My store's manager (who was waaaay too nice a guy for that company) learned this first hand. I have dozens more stories.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that your local Performance store has a staff that knows nothing. It's by design.

I've run into a few Performance employees who actually know what they're doing. Still, I don't usually go in there unless my favorite bike shop doesn't carry what I am looking for.

You should feel bad, you behaved like an assclown. You think these people are supposed to be born with the knowlege (that you didn't have) or do you think that a $6.50/hr. employee is supposed to have been to bti?

Time to lower expectations. I can walk into any retail store in America and come up with some applicable questions that nobody in the place would be able to answer. We don't pay enough for stuff to expect people to know this stuff for $8/hour.

This poor girl got in trouble for nothing? That's messed up.

She tried to help. She did the best she could with what she had. This is the kind of thing that frustrates the kids nowadays about working. Darned if you do, darned if you don't.

i dunno. lots of chat about poor performance at performance, but I've always had good luck with the Cary store. the guys there are all reasonably competent - some more than others of course, but by and large a good crowd.
