Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fit questions

I started cycling this spring, and I've been thinking for a while that my bike (a Klein Q-Pro) was too big for me. Despite playing with the saddle, saddle position, etc, I couldn't get comfortable for long distances.

So I finally went for a real fitting session yesterday. After the fitting I road a couple of bikes that they set up for me according to the results of the session. I rode a ridley orion for about 20 minutes and it felt a heck of a lot more comfortable than my current bike. Now as I look over the geometry for the ridley and the results of fit, I'm shocked at how small it is. Like I said, it felt great for the time I rode it, but it's just so much smaller than my klein.

I'm 5'10" and I assume about average dimensions (my legs might be a bit long). I'm planning on going back tomorrow to hopefully ride the ridley a bit longer and talk to the fit specialist, but I'm curious about others my size. I know fit is highly subjective, but it would make me more comfortable to know that there are other riders my size on a similarly sized frame. For reference the seat tube on the orion (C-T) is 51cm and the effective top tube is 53cm. The klein is a 56 with a seat tube (C-T) of 58.1cm and top tube of 57.2cm

Thanks for any input!

Neil.

I'm normally not a huge fan of these I'm X cm tall and I ride a X cm size frame as there are many many other variables that you need to consider as well. I'm a half inch taller (179cm) and I'm on a 55 C - T with a 54.3 top tube. I'm gonna guess you're not super comfortable on the Klein because your reach is too long. My personal frame selection philosophy is to go as small as possible while acheiving proper reach (without a crazy long stem) and not exceeding your saddle to bar height differential tolerance (without tons of spacers and\or high rise stem) and lastly maintaining good fore\aft balance.

i'm 5'10" and 57cm is way long for me in toptube. i'm best between 54.5cm and 56cm with a 120 to 100mm stem. just make sure you ride it for a bit before chopping the steerer, as the smaller frame probably has a shorter head tube.

I agree with of you guys. well I do not know the klein this guy is talking about but what I have noticed is that in all the new bikes u have to go by the virtual lenght or efective lenght of the frame, if the lenght is a little bit long then get just the next shorter frame. I learned that the hard way, I got a ridley compact a few years ago (awesome ride anyways) and im just between a L and a M size, whent with the L because it was a 56... big mistake... after 1 year I sold it. Now im looking for my next ridley frame the orion. No money for the damocles in this pocket

I'm 5'10" with a long torso and longer arms. I ride a 56 specialized that has an effective top tube of 56.5, C-T of 52, 130 stem that is flipped and gives me about a 3 inch drop. It fits me. My last ride was a little smaller (around a 53), and was workable for me, might fit you better if you're a little more normally proportioned. Your Klein would definitely be too big for me.

I rode a 57cm road bike for 15 years, I'm 5'9" and the bike never really felt comfortable, then I bought a 54 cm road bike and rode that for 4 years and it still didn't feel like it fitted exactly right. The top tube on the 54cm bike was 54.5, which was still too long for my reach, so I ended up going for a very short stem and that felt about right. Now I ride a custom welded frame that is 54cm with a 53cm top tube that I use with a 120mm stem and I am quite happy with this set up now. So from my personal experience getting the right fit is what makes the difference in being comfortable or not.
