Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Drafting like a-holes on a busy highway...

Yesterday I was driving and I see a pack of spandex clad roadies drafting and racing. No big deal they are going with traffic but the one guy is trying to attack and pass. I don't give a damn if you want to ride like a competitive racer or even if you do race but the shoulder of the road is designed so that you the cyclist can enjoy the road without making us the driver have to come closer to the other side of the yellow line. If a large truck was in the other lane we probably would have hit. If anybody is in the northern CA area and rides highway 12 and you get hit by a car because you were riding like a jerk...boo hoo I'll have no sympathy for you.

Actually, no, it's not. Shoulders are filled with broken glass from you, the driver, smashing up other cars. No cyclist in their right mind would ride in the middle of a shoulder, as their tires would pop in a few minutes.

I'm sorry you were an extra 2 minutes late to your Jamba Juice for a wheat grass shot, but them's the breaks.

Ride the shoulder? Sounds like an excellent way to puncture a tire and crash.

The OP is idiot.

Hmmm...will it explode like carbon fiber? Does the age or cost of the said spandex affect the rate at which it burns?

I was chased by a dog last night. Ugly dog. He had 2 different colored eyes and was a ghetto mutt. This dog has been barking at me like crazy each time I pass on my commute.

Well last night the owner was sitting on the front lawn with his music cranking super load. I can tell pretty quickly that he's arguing with his neighbors across the street about his right to play his music as loud as he wants. He's sitting on a lawn chair drinking a beer and has his dog - crazy dog - not on his leash sitting next to him seemingly as an intimidation factor.

I thought I was going to get by real nice and free until the dog noticed I was there. I got the jump on the dog and was out to an early lead, until that mutt put it inot high gear. Holly crap he had speed.

As I began to finally pull away I heard the owner yell to the dog, "Use the shoulder! The shoulder of the road is designed so that you the crazy racing dog can enjoy the road without making us the driver have to come closer to the other side of the yellow line".

All I could think was, "DUH!....dumb mutt."

That's about as wrong as two boys..... Ever heard of the right to use the road? If the lane is occupied by cyclists, the law requires that you wait until it is safe to pass. Any particular reason you mentioned the roadies were wearing spandex?

Luckily I don't have to ride on any highways. Plenty of nice mainly empty rural roads around here. I feel for you guys in the states though.

OP: Cycle more on the road and your perspective will change...funny how one cyclist errant by a few inches/feet attracts such ire among drivers--even those that post on BF.

According to your logic, cycling like a "jerk" should land you in the hospital; what about driving like a jerk? Does the latter give you the right to land someone else in the hospital? As a driver you have far more responsibility as you possess far more lethal force.

If a truck were headed in the opposite lane then simply slow down--or were you in too much of a rush?

Share the road. End thread.

Whoa pay attention, driving a car gives him the right to tell any cyclist anywhere what to do and boy, they'd better listen!

I just tried that (riding the shoulder) during my vacation at the Outer Banks. Bantam speaks the truth, and I have the tire, tube and road rash to validate his statement.

1.) If you need to pass a group of cyclists, and there is a truck coming the other way, there's this thing on your car called a brake. You press it with your foot, and the car slows down. That way you don't have to kill anyone - yourself, the truck driver, or the roadies (even though we deserve it).

2.) While some roadies, and I've seen it on my group rides too, ride recklessly or without seeming regard for motorized traffic, keep in mind that we are traffic as well. We are vehicles. And it is legal for us to ride in the road. We have to obey the rules of the road just like you do, and we should. But it is legal for us to ride in the road, side by side even. It is your legal responsibility to pass safely, even though you clearly would rather run us off the road.

To sum up: You're not the only person on the planet. If you encounter a pack of roadies, take a deep breath, slow down, pass safely, and be on your way. There's no reason to have a stroke about this.

Ummmm.... last time I checked there was more rural than you can shake a stick at, here in the "states". It's not all downtown Detroit, ya know....... And most of it isn't ice-bound for half the year.
