Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

diagnose this noise

After several recommendations from forum members, I ordered a pair of 105 SPD-SL pedals from PBK(who I strongly recommend). After only a few 20-30 mile rides there is a terrible creaking/popping noise coming from somewhere near my pedals and crank. It is so loud that I am embarrassed to ride next to people and I found myself riding slower to avoid the noise. It only happens under certain loading and on the downstroke of my left leg. Anybody know what this might be?

Today I'm going to put my old pedals back on and see if I get the same noise. If I do, I probably need a new BB. If not then I need new pedals! this sucks

sometimes just a little dab of grease on your cleats helps. definitely start with swapping the old pedal son and see what happens.

I had the same problem with some Time RXS pedals. The sound only occured on the downstroke and I could feel a "catch." I was worried it was the bottom bracket as well. My solution was to take some T-9 and sprayed it on the spring of the pedal. It seemed to help. Ultimately, the sound has gone away.

With these SPD-SL cleats, some will wear themselves loose after only a few rides and need to be retighted. Lube everything.

I had a similar clicking noise happen to me on the downstroke on the left crank. It turned out to be my bottom bracket (loose bearing type). I cleaned it out, repacked it with grease, adjusted it, and the noise is gone. Since your noise started with the pedal replacement, this may not be related. But if and after you do rule the pedals out, check the bottom bracket.
