Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

climb category

i was wondering what climb category this hill would be given...the stats are:
1.8 miles long
516 feet vertical change
avg. of 5.4% grade

if it helps at all this hill usually comes near the last third of my 30 mile loop

Tour de France mountain climbs are based mostly on the elevation gain of the climb. HC climbs are 5000 feet or more in one climb. Category 1 is 4000 feet or more, etc. The rating can be elevated by sustained sections over 10% or demoted by grades less than 6%. Ratings can also be affected by the position on the climb within the stage. Hills less than 1000 feet sometimes get rated if the race is boring that day.

bear in mind there is no "official" way of categorizing climbs. but yeah, i'd say it's a 4 for professionals. For us humble folk, though? Who knows.

There's categories for hills? I'm a cat 4, what kinds of hills should I climb?

Can you tell me what category this is?
