Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where are bike WEIGHTS listed?

Is there a reference guide anywhere. Trek does not list them so you are at the mercy of the bike salesman.
or do stores have scales?
Anywhere on the net where bike weights are listed?

Beware... mainly components and ultra-lightweight stuff there.

LBS sometimes have scales, sometimes not. Where do you live?

Most manufacturers are reluctant to post weights. There also is no standard for weighing a bike. If a manufacturer lists it is likely the smallest frame size available and usually without pedals. It is very hard to do an apples to apples comparison based on weight. ElJamoquio gave you a very good site to search although the listings are somewhat out of date with regard to the newest stuff, just search their forums for more current products.

Weight should not be so important that a fraction of a pound really matters, this from someone who rides a sub 16lb bike (I weighed mine complete with pedals, bottle cages and computer mounting hardware.)

Actually, most listed frame weights are for 54, 55, or 56 cm frames in my experience (still on the small side, but not the smallest they make), but yes the weight is probably as sold without accessories.

I bought a digital fish scale and take it with me wherever I go.

You'll be a hit at your next get-together with bicycling buddies, everyone will want to weigh their bike.

most frame weights are listed as 54 or below....without paint (sometimes), hangers or bolts.

Manufacturers don't want to list because there's a wide tolerance on components. If they did list it and the bike ends up half a pound heavier (and that's easy within tolerance), they would get pissed-off customers.

A good bike shop will have a scale where you can hang up the real bike you're thinking of buying.
