Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I posted my pic on another thread but just found this thread. Here's me (my matching color Tri outfit truly is purely coincidental) and my new '12 Elite.

The new e5 frame is nice. Real nice. I haven't had a chance to weigh it yet, but I'm thinking it's right at 17lbs.

how's the ride? any flex in the BB area? Still debating on building up that frameset or go w/ cdale.

It might be more than that. I've got a 2011 E5 frameset that I built up without concern about weight, and it's considerably heavier...but it's a 61cm, and the 2011 version uses an aluminum steerer as opposed to the full carbon fork on the 2013s. OP rims, Powertap Pro rear hub, Ultegra front hub, Frankendrivetrain, King SS cages, etc. - came to 21 lbs. The three pounds over my carbon Look 585 doesn't slow me down in the least.

jsigone: The ride feels very similar to the older e5 that I had before, but maybe a little bit stiffer in the BB area. Handling is also similar. The big draw for me was the weight reduction and the fact that I really grew to dislike the black and red color scheme of the one I had before.

actually heres the bike ive been looking at on craigslist according to the seller its the 2009 allez with shimano tiagra derailer and about 800 miles on it.

i would greatly appreciate your thoughts and opinions on the bike and would also like to know if any one can tell me whether this is a bike that would be worthy of upgrading to compete with something like a CAAD10 or something higher up., thanks!

I have the same bike. Ive upgraded the drivetrain (sans crankset) to 6700 and I love it. Not sure how it would compare to a CAAD, but if the price is right, it is an amazing bike IMO.

I have a Sport Compact. I think retail on it was $850. It had Sora shifters, which worked fine, but it is easy to fall into the upgrade trap. I don't race, but I ride a lot, and I have enjoyed every moment on it (not counting the moments when I wanted long century rides to end).

Thanks! My only other question is about mileage. It has 800 miles on it. Is there anything it would need for sure changed? Or when would things need to be changed miles wise

Also would like to add the price on it is $600. So $600 for a 2009 ALLEZ Tiagra with 800 miles. Thoughts?

Not that it is impossible, but I would think closer to 19 lbs with those wheels and Rival. I could be wrong though, those new E5 frames are fantastically light and stiff.

Padley that's a sharp looking Allez. I have the same model/year and have been thinking about selling or upgrading.
I'm leaning towards the upgrade and completing the groupo to Ultegra via eBay/CL, and buying some light wheels (maybe Neuvation R28 SLs).

How did you choose the upgrades that you did?

Still uncertain here... thanks.

Here's my new 2013 Allez Compact--first road bike ever. Loving it--have ridden nearly every day since I got it several weeks ago. Stock for now......
EDIT: not stock anymore--it now has VP Thin Gripster Pedals (which I really like).

Finally weighed it at the shop today (exactly as pictured above, pedals and bottle cages included, with the exception of a Thomson X2 stem).

Told you so!
