It isn't surprising, top endurance athletes are usually of small to medium height with a light frame and a high percentage of slow twitch muscle fibers.

Lance is roughly the same height as Ekimov, he just isn't standing up straight in that pic.

And Lance was pretty damn big for a climber, not heightwise, but weightwise...
