Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gear problems.

I was riding last night when this problem started up. I was going up a small but long incline so I shifted into a higher gear. The chain started jumping from gear to gear in the back and I have no idea why. The only way it wouldn't do this was if I was in a very low gear. It is very annoying since I have tons of hills in my area. My cranks and gear system are not of high class at all and I know nothing about how much it would cost to replace them just to get a decent pair that won't make me scared of going head over bars while going uphill. Any suggestions about replacing them for a reasonable price? Or how I could fix this on my own? Anything will help.

Sounds like your RD needs adjusting... should just be a cable tension adjustment.

There should be a little barrel adjuster on your RD... turn in 1/4 turn counterclockwise and run through the gears to make sure they shift nicely. You may need another 1/4 turn or so to get it perfect

Or The maintenance board on this forum.

Awesome. I'll check that out. That sounds like something it could be. It is a new bike so I am sure now that the cables are being used they might need adjustments. Thanks!

Is it a new bike from a local shop ? If so, most bike shops offer free adjustments for a year or so on bikes they sell. On new bikes, the cables stretch and gears & brakes get a bit out of adjustment as everything "settles in" during the first couple of hundred miles.

it doesn't matter if its the cheapest group on the market. the drivetrain needs to be cleaned frequently, and you probably just need to twist the barrel adjuster a quarter to half turn for the proper cable tension. if its new, take it to the shop, they usually haave a 30-60 day free adjustment to compensate for cable stretch
