SE Michigan: Triple Versus (50/39 or 50/34) Double Crank?
Pros of 50/39 is repetition of gears, to minimize the leap from small to large Chainring, and less need to shift between Chainrings if a preference is made for doing the majority of your riding with either the 39-Chainring or the 50 Chainring.
Pros of 50/34 is lower gears.
Or just get a triple and say fughettaboutit.
As far as a compact 50/34 Double Crank ... The weapon of choice has been the FC-R700 from Shimano. Is the R700 still considered better than Shimano's [Ultegra SL] "Hollowtech II Crankset ... FC-6650-G"?

There is no need for a triple downriver, in my opinion. And it's going to be tough to find a 39 tooth 110 BCD ring; of course, you could always try to find a 50 tooth 130 BCD ring.
I don't think it matters much, though. I have both a 50 and a 53 on two different bikes. Neither one has me wishing for the small ring, even with a 21 tooth big end of the cassette.
