Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just spent a lot of money

I took my Windsor down to my LBS because I couldn't get my derailers to work. I would have just gotten a tune, but didn't have the time to wait for my bike, they said it would have taken a couple of days. But anyway, took it in, I said hey can you adjust my derailers (it wouldn't move when I shifted the front one) so he did. When I was in there I was thinking man I want a speedometer computer thing. So 30 bucks for that, 5 bucks for the labor, 20 dollars for fixing my bike and labor and a waterbottle holder. $70 all together.

I have clipless pedals and no biking shoes, so street shoes or you know air jordans aren't the best for those small pedals. So what do I do? Yea, I bought myself some 120 dollar specialized road biking shoes, plus the 20 dollar things that go on the bottom that let you clip in. 150 all together for the shoes. I spent 230 dollars yesterday for my bike. But I get paid friday so I can except that money gone. But now I know how fast i'm going haha.

In the cyclist's world, $230 is not considered a lot. I was expecting for you to say that you couldn't wait for the repair and picked up a $4,000 bike.

Sounds like a very reasonable amount of outlay for some goods that will make biking a lot more enjoyable. You will probably also take those shoes with you to the next bike (if you upgrade).

+1

My logic would have been to say sure, keep the bike for a couple of days, but since I'll need something to ride in the interim, do you have that Paris Carbon in a 54cm size?

$230? That's a drop in the bucket compared to the loads of $$ you'll be feverishly spending faster than you earn it over the coming years. Unfortunately, there's no antidote for this condition - not that any of us actually WANT to stop spending lots of $$ on our bikes anyway...

You've only just begun. Next you'll need a higher-end bike, making the Windsor your off-season bike. Then you'll need a cyclocross bike, a fixie, a loaded touring bike, a TT machine, etc.

Get off this train while you can, but I suspect it might be a bit too late for that already.

Geez, I thought you were going to say you spent $6,000 for a carbon wheelset. Or $5,000 for a decent frame.

$230?

Someone please lock this thread.

There are some jerseys that cost more than that. And yes, all money is not the same to all people. But still ..

Congrats on your purchase. I remember my first trip to go buy a road bike. I was thinking if I wanted to splurge big time, I'd pay $500 for a road bike ..

So, $1,200 later, I have an entry level(ish) Fuji Roubaix, a pair of Sidis that I still use today, Look pedals and a helmet.

Wow, wish that was all I spent. The past two weeks I have bought a pair of Zipp 404's ($2,000), Zipp tires ($150), Zipp skewers ($50), Zipp brake pads ($80), Campy record 11-21 cassette ($250), Campy record 12-25 cassette ($250), Campy record 13-26 cassette ($250), Campy chorus chain ($65), a few tools ($50). I'm sure there are some other things that I am forgetting.

In summary, this is an expensive sport / hobby!!!

A frame over $5000, you're buying because of bling, not performance. That's perfectly fine. I would guess "decent" frames, in terms of performance, probably start at $500 (probably less), not $5000.

Cycling doesn't need to be expensive. I would bet there are plenty of guys on this forum who haven't put $5000 into their bike in ten years and could still outperform 75% of the riders here.

I was expecting a story about buying a new Pinny or BMC with a $2000.00 wheelset. But!.... $230.00 is a lot of money. Have fun with the parts.

True, but then cycling doesn't need to be about performance, either.

The Soloist Team is one cool looking bike by the way.

You were riding clipless pedals with regular shoes?

...I'm just confused as to why you got a bike with clipless pedals and didn't get the shoes that go with those pedals at the same time

3145 dollars in two weeks with out a new bike impressive!
I don't know wetherr that is a good or a bad thing. if you think about 230 in terms of what percentage of your bikes cost, weather it was 300 0r 4000 dollars, was its a lot of money, but you need to spend it to be comfortable and satisfied.

Hey OP- thought maybe you'd like to hear from someone with a budget closer to yours. I think some of these folks spend 1/2 of my yearly income every season on bike stuff. For me dropping $230 bucks on anything in one day is a lot, but it sounds like you've made some good upgrades! Clipless pedals and shoes should last a long time and computers are great. With not much work you could learn how to do your own basic maintenance- this saves on $$ spent on repairs/tuneups and by keeping you out of the LBS it cuts down those opportunities for impulse buys.

Yes, sometimes you need to pay good money for good equipment/service/comfort, but cycling expenses shouldn't require you to get a second job or put you into debt. A second job would really cut into your riding time, and debt doesn't make you faster.

What the hell is with all the gloating about how much everybody spent on their bikes? $230 is a lot of money to some, and a drop in the bucket to others.

To the OP, kudos to you for getting what you want/need!

Thanks for injecting some anti-elietism into this thread! I have to imagine that people have better things to do than to let the OP know that he/she may have less money than they do by shrouding it in sarchasim on how much they spent on equipment.

Life does not have to always be a contest on how much you spend,..... or taking the time bragging to others about how you spent more than they did.

The OP could have titled his post better, but the responses were nausiating. Shall we all drop our pants (females not included) and just break out the measuring stick so we can clear things up straight away?

When some folks I know ask me why I don't play golf, I usually say "No thanks, I've already got a rediculously expensive hobby." Meaning cycling, of course. Plus, I don't think the wife would put up with two rediculously expensive hobbies.

This sport little by little creeps on ca$h real quick. Seriously if you save every ticket for the next few years of all the money spent on cycling toys, it will easy become a down payment for a house.

I just spent $165.00 on cycling stuff and for me its a lot of money.

Likewise. I'm pretty good at saving up money, but being an undergrad the impending debt has me cringing. I spend only on what I feel I 'need'. I was hoping to save up for a felt for the end of the season next year, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to put that much income into a purchase that could be pretty easily stolen from campus. I bought cheap SPD clipless shoes from pricepoint.com. They've worked alright till now but they're not awe-inspiring.

Congrats on getting what you needed OP! If you need to spend, be smart about it and keep your needs (bike related and other) in mind.

I am the same boat as the OP...

And to all those spending $4k plus in a month... I will bet I may still be faster than half of you, and I spent $1100 on my bike. Fitness > Bike.

ANd I know most pros could kick my arse on a Huffy...
