Rim tape problem - suggestions?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rim tape problem - suggestions?

The Son of the Dark One has a problem. Had my second flat this month from the same problem. A small section of the new rim tape on my rear Aksium pulled toward the center and creased, rubbing a hole in the tube. The section was abut 1" long. I'm not new to installing rim tape - it was even and tight and I rubbed it down carefully as I flatted from the problem once before. This is the "narrow" rim tape that is supposed to work w/ 700c rims. I'm thinking of (i) cleaning the rim with acetone this time to try to get the tape to stick or (ii) going with the wider tape.

Suggestions?

what kind of tape... some don't stick very well.

I like Velox. Works great.

+1 on wider tape. I run standard width, fits fine.

I have Performance tape on there - I figured it was all the same. I'll put Velox in tomorrow.

Thanks!

Velox comes in two widths. The narrower one has blue print and the wider one has green print. Use the green. I bought the blue print one and it was way too narrow, even on my narrow Velocity rim. I flatted in a day and had to buy the wider one instead.

I love performance blue rim strips. I have it on both my road bikes and have never gotten a spoke end flat since I started using it. It is cheap, easy to install or remove and can be reused.

That's the ticket.

I had exactly the same problem with performance skinny tape. I got velox tape that was a couple mm wider and haven't had the problem since.

I'm pretty sure it comes in 3 widths. 11mm (narrow), 17mm (medium), and 22mm (wide). 17mm works on most rims, 22 on the really wide mtb rims, and I have yet to use a rim that needed 11mm. The OP's problem might be using 11mm when s/he really needs 17mm.

Nope. Was using Performance 17mm. I replaced w/ Velox today. The glue on the Velox felt more substantial - I actually had to pull hard to get it off the spool. That's obviously why it comes on plastic spool. I think it's Velox FTW.

Thanks for the help.

Just went through the same change. Narrow performance was depressing into spoke holes exposing the edges. Replaced with Velox, MUCH better!!

Continental High Pressure Rim Strip. My new favorite.
I had some problems with the rim strip on my Alta race wheels, and replaced them with these.
Super strong.

We do not use rimtape.
Installed Veloplugs . . . lighter than any tape. Plastic plug fits into each rim hole. Not cheap, but no problems.
Bonus: now able to remove/install kevlar beaded tire without any tools at all.

How do plugs make tire installation easier?

If after applying conventional rim tape there's any need to get at the nipple from inside the rim, you can just pop out the veloplug. You also don't have any adhesive to mess with. You just pop one into each hole.

Got mine from https://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30...ils&sku=RS1001
