Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weight weenies for shoes

Has anybody ever compiled actual weight listings of common & not so common shoes?

Many weight weenies get all fussed up about saving 50-100 grams on a certain brand of pedals or any other component(s), yet fail to consider the weights (rotating at that...) of their cycling shoes.

Just curious.

i use the dmt kyoma shoes. they fit really well and are super light.

the specialized carbon shoes are like tanks compared to dmt kyoma (or however you spell that)

New Specialized S-Works shoe is wicked light. Makes last years model feel like a lead shoe. I was shocked when I held it on Monday. Now unless the dmt is made of helium, I bet the new S-Works is comparable.

Rocket7 is supposedly the lightest production shoe on the market at +/- 180 grams per shoe.

And if you use Speedplays, you can get them with 4-hole drilling and not have to use the adapter plate.

Real weight weenies don't wear any shoes. They simply push a spindle with their bare feet.

I don't know anyone weenie enough to get the lightest pedal in the world -- the aerolight.

I have a pair and they're the most painful things I ever put on my feet. Because there's no leather upper, if you pronate or otherwise apply pressure to the sides of the uppers, the rigid carbon fiber is going to hurt compared to leather. There's also very little adjustment that can be done after construction whereas shoes with leather uppers can have new uppers made. Also, the lack of leather uppers means that the shoe doesn't "grip" your foot at all. They feel and fit like loose slippers. For me, that meant one of my big toenails rammed the front of the shoe every pedal stroke until a hematoma developed under it and I almost lost the nail.

My advice is to avoid custom shoes unless you really, really need them. The expense and hassle isn't worth it just to have light shoes. I would give anything to have normal feet and be able to buy shoes off the shelf. For the amount of money I spent (and 1.5 years later, I still don't have a pair of shoes that fit) I could have bought an R3 frame.

My R7s are on their 3rd trip back for adjustments. They're getting very close and I think it will be the last iteration. They've been very patient and I think most, if not all, of the fit problems may have been due to casting problems they have no control over.

LOL, I think you would be better off just peeing before a ride. You can easily get rid of 250 grams like that, even more.

BUT IT'S ROTATING WEIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Abusing laxatives + colonic irrigations will also make you fly up hills. Elvis cleaned out 15 pounds of waste that way.

You're the first one to comment negatively about Bart's shoes. Maybe you had a bad casting. My buddy also had some really bad feet and has no problems with them (other than breaking the shoes, which bart fixed for free.)

the DMT mag lights are horrible shoes, they transmit road vibration and crack easily. The Nike poggio 4ul is a nice combo of light and fairly comfy. Yes weight weenies do weigh their shoes and know the weights. If you serch the site there are plenty of listings but shoes are one of the areas that just because its light dosen't make it right. You will see lots of those guys run filtes or heavier saddles for comfort on longer rides.

DMT - 239g for size 41
Specialized 2008 S-Works - 240g for size 42
2008 is https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqP...jsp?spid=26160 Thank you, GBP.

1 size larger for 1 gram difference? You'd never notice. Even though it is in Specialized's favor

That shoe is frightening...

At least my s-works look semi-normal.

Don't quote claimed weights. Until you know the weight, they are a baseline, allow about 6% either way, but usually above.

I use Poggio 4ULs, and aside from quite a long break-in period, they are great. 253g each shoe for a very light total of 506g, size 45.

And aerolites aren't exactly a great mechanism. You want well constructed, light pedals, find some M2Racer Orb IIs. The lightest I've seen is 98g for the pair. Rumor has it a company (omniracer I think) bought the design and may be reproducing them.

Yeah, that's pretty crazy, but hey, if there's a market....

I have the Rocket7 road shoes and they are fantastic (the only pair of cycling shoes I've ever owned that actually fit my feet). I bought them for the fit, but the fact that they are so ridiculously light is always a plus, I guess.

Bart (LUST) calculated that Vaughters won the Mount Ventoux time trial in the Dauphine because of his shoes.

My calculations show that without shoes, riding barefoot, Vaughters would've ended up dead last in the time trial.
