Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

crotch rot!

don't worry, no photo attatched to this post!

i recently had to throw out my trusty old chammy bib shorts, and got a new pair of campagnolo bibs, not top of the range but not cheap. the inner lining isn't chamois but a sort of padded man-made material - anyway, after always riding with chamois and never having any problems, i've found that these new shorts are chafing like mad - after a long ride i end up with a very inflamed crotch....

obv the easy answer is to go back to chammy - but i'm wondering if anyone has a solution to this problem? any ideas?

Never had any problems with any of my bibs and they all have man-made padding.
Try a little chamois cream, butt butter, bag balm, etc. until things clear up.

You do realize that almost all modern shorts come with synthetic chamois? Unless your "trusty old chammy bib shorts" were really old they too were synthetic too. You can still find real chamois shorts but you have to look for them.

If your "trusty old chammy bib shorts" were real chamois then it isn't any real surprise the leather went bad- it's part of the deal.

Perhaps your new shorts just don't work for you. Everybody's body is different and those differences are why different people swear by different brands. Find some that work for you.

I use Desitin, the diaper rash stuff afterwards.. Its got Zinc Oxide in it and seems to work really well.

Assos doesnt have Zinc Oxide.. I like the Assos creme a lot but for the super hot and sweaty days, Ive gone back to BodyGlide as it does have zinc oxide in it.

I had been getting persistent pimples or boils in my crotch until I stopped using cream. Once I stopped using chamois creme, I no longer chafing and the irritations have gone away. For me drier is better...

Slightly along the same lines of this thread (sorry to hijack) but does anyone ever get numbness, especially at the head of the penis?

That's totally normal. You shouldn't worry unless it lasts for longer than a week. To get the numbness to go away, try slamming it in your patio door a couple of times. That should do the trick.

JUST KIDDING. Numbness in your d!ck isn't good. You're compressing something in there with a saddle that doesn't fit well, I'd wager.

I hate to say it, but maybe your bits and the new shorts just don't get along. Shorts, like saddles and shoes, are highly individual things and what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. Unfortunately it is hard to 'try' shorts without buying them.

FWIW, been riding for over 30 years and never had to use 'chamois cream'. Doesn't sound particularly appealing...
