Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My wife rides sometimes, gets into it for a few months then backs it off. I'm fine with that. We would maybe ride once a week together and that is enough for both of us. She like sher group and pace and I like mine.

I had a french GF that was cycling crazy and at first I thought it was the best. After a while of never being able to mention the word "RIDE" without her getting ready to go, I became slower than I ever had been and really missed riding with my friends talking sex, cars, beer and bikes.

I really enjoy the evry now and then ride with my wife, She really pushes herself to the limit.

I got my wife (then girlfriend) into riding in the mid80s when we met in college. We've ridden ever since though we both slowed down quite a bit after I was in a bad motorcycle accident back in the 90s. We've both picked it back up the last 8 years.

Alot of you guys talk about having to slow down. Good or bad for me the situation is opposite. She can put her head down and motor along at 19-21mph alot longer than I can. Oh well.

I have a friend that bought a tandem just so he can ride with his wife and it has worked well for him. A ride with my wife would be slower than a recovery ride and would probably drive me crazy. I have toyed with the tandem idea.

Now we just don't ride anymore because a "long ride" for him is 26 miles, for me that would be a good evening ride but on a weekend a "long ride" needs to be at least 40. And I aim for the hills where he shoots the flat land...

I've ridden with my wife twice. When we first started going out, she bought a Cannondale so she could ride with me. That bike has been on the trainer in our house for 14 years now. My 14 year old son uses it now. (notice the timing on this).

It just doesn't work. You'll resent the speed your spouse/gf/bf rides at when you want a workout. She/he just isn't going to see any reason to ride at 20+ mph.

The last time my wifester rode a bike, she crashed it into a parked car. Needless to say, she thinks that my biking is some form of mental disease from which I suffer, and she merely indulges me in my delusions!

EDIT: The crash was in college, circa 8 years ago.

Not really. My view is that every lasting relationship needs to have some time apart and cycling is that time for me.

Do you fellas enjoy athletic women, or is cycling strictly a personal hobby?
Yes, I ride them both...they ride me as well. Sometimes I consider riding with my wife a chore, and with my girlfriend a hobby. However these roles swap from time to time as my girlfriend is my previous wife.

A Tandem is a great way to get a non-cycling significant other into cycling. Also, a great way for two cyclists at different levels to spend time with each other.

I'd love to. But Paris Hilton's lost twin sister 'does not do bikes'.

We are going shoe shopping tomorrow though.

It might not have worked in your relationship, but it works for other people.

I ride with two different couples. The married couple started riding independently from each other and are equally adept cyclists. Both can take a strong pull at the front of a 20+ pace line, although the male(the twig that he is), is a much better climber.

For the second couple, the guy was a strong cyclists for many years before he met his girlfriend. She showed interest in cycling early in the relationship, and he welcomed the challenge of accomodating his riding to allow for her participation. She still doesn't ride at 20+, but it's not because she doesn't "see any reason to." She's a new rider, but she's advancing quickly, and I don't think he resents having to change his riding habits. They ride together, he often rides without her, and when schedules allow, both couples join in the group rides. The more experienced female belongs on any ride, while we alter the route accordingly when the newbie female joins us, but not by much.

My girlfriend of 5 months has never shown interest. In fact, she seems more interested in fixing my bikes. This does not surprise me, as I found her yesterday giving me instructions as we(well mostly her) worked on her truck. I've never let her attempt to work on my bikes, but there's absolutely no way she could be a worse wrench than me. I'd be open to riding with her, but, as of now, I'd never buy her a bike. My graduate student stipend dictates that all bike expenditures are limited in nature, and limited to buying stuff for me.

My wife is really not into the entire cycling scene, but I do ride with my 16 y.o. daughter. We both have half bikes and we try to ride our tandem at least once a week.

No, we don't ride together. My gf rides a heavy hybrid around town... I've offered to build her a road bike so we can go on rides together, but she won't bite! She doesn't see the need in having more than one bike. I got her on a road bike while we were on vacation a few weeks ago and she loved it... so I'm hoping that maybe it's put some ideas in her head

She'll tool around the neighnorhood with me, and has done a 25mile organized ride.... but she skips the multi-times a week rides that I do.
