Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ride Report (Pics)

This was my first organized century and it was in middletown Delaware (the shore fire century)...well, i live in pittsburgh so my father and i drove down the day before and stayed in a hotel that night...the 5:30am wake up call began the day! By the time we got there and registered, it was exactly 7:00am..we took of and started the ride with it being really foggy and around 75 degrees...by mile 40, it was baking! It warmed up to 86 degrees and it was only to get hotter...mile 50, it reached 93 degrees with a heat index of 110! So every rest stop for me was: getting hosed off, food and water! After 6 hours in the saddle, we finished the 101 mile ride! It was awesome to finish a century with my dad, who did it on a hybrid bike! Here are some of the pics!

Well done.
I thought about doing that ride, it's just an hour north of me, but I did a century last weekend and blahblah.
Was the ride well organized? How many riders? Were there pacelines a-plenty?

the ride was very well organized! i want to say about 500 or so riders and they were a few pacelines. I went with a couple for bout 2-3 miles at a time, then had to drop out to let my dad catch up, but each pace line was probably about 5-9 riders...the biggest i seen was about 20 of them and they were flying! I went off with them for about 2 miles and we were doing about 24mph

That's a pretty sweet accomplishment, especially given the heat and humidity. Always better when you do it with someone you know.

I was all set to go run this event then realized it was going to be hot and I'm a wimp, so I passed, then I skipped out on the Atlantic Cycling ride over in Easton today.

Guess I need to get one of those black CSC wristbands to remind myself to stop being so lazy.

I thought about doing that ride, it's just an hour north of me, but I did a century last weekend and blahblah.

Hour north? Are you in DE or MD?

As for the pacelines, I don't recall the Shore Fire Century as being particularly large, so I'd doubt it had the sort of pacelines you'd expect from a larger event like the Lancaster Covered Bridge Metric or such. I admit, running the LCBM spoiled me. I love getting dropped from a line then being able to pick up another right after.

What recumbent riders sacrifice in dignity they gain back in aerodynamics...I just feel sort of sad now.

They also lose a lot of climbing ability I believe. Not worth it IMO. Worm burners.

I have a 'bent (Easy Racer Gold Rush). GREAT ride for centuries, but I tend to ride my Giant TCR C1 90% of the time. When one develops "recumbent legs", they can actually be faster than a DF (diamond frame). True, they really suck at climbing, but scorch downhill. Passed many pacelines going downhill. Passed BY many pacelines going uphill!! Still a lot of fun...especially when one conquers the "dignity" thing!! Oh, yeah, it has a kickstand (another "dignity" thing I had to get over)!

Don't be sad. What most cyclists don't realize is that they actually hide rocket thrusters under the seat, which is the reason they are so fast. Oh yeah, that recumbent riders don't need chains to lock their bikes, they use sharks with laser beams. All very high tech. Cheaters.

Actually just after I posted the question I went and looked on nashbar and performance, and didn't see any sunglasses at all with no rim on top or bottom. I'm with you... and that's exactly what I was looking for. I will keep looking. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words Plow. It's great that you and your dad enjoyed yourselves. I was one of the many volunteers and the number of riders on the road was 572. This is down about a hundred or so from past years due to the intense heat and humidity. There were four pacelines that we knew about and one of them finished the 101 miles in 5 hours, 22 minutes including stops. For everyone's general information, we had five rest stops on the century with four SAGs on continuous duty.

Mark your calendar for the Savage Century on October 13. Check the White Clay Bicycle Club site for information. No, it's not the Rockies, but it is a true challenge for hill enthusiasts who unanamously agree that the name is a true representation of the ride.

Hope to see you at future rides.
