Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimming a post in a R3 - Advice please

Hi All,

My options for a good looking, lightweight 32.4mm seatpost are getting smaller and smaller.

Don't like Thomson (dunno why, I just don't)
Deda is only 290mm long
Campy Record is like hens teeth (very rare)

The rest just don't do it for me either.

So, my question is, which is best to shim in a R3, a 27.2mm post or a 31.6mm post?

Or does it really matter?

Thanks.

BTW - I'm 190lbs, if that matters.

the stock post weights a ton and the adjustment sucks big time. my toupe was either pointing up or down.I used the USE 31.6 shim with an EC90 post. works 100% perfect. let me know if you cant find the shim, i can try and find where i got it from. it was 15$ i think.

are you saying that the record post is hard to get? its readily available.

Since you've ruled out the obvious "buy a Thompson" answer:

Having an undersize seatpost in the tube scares me, but if you must do this, shim a 31.6- you will have a lighter shim and a stronger, stiffer seatpost. It will also clamp better with a thinner shim. There will be less room for the bottom of the post to do the hula dance inside your seat tube as well.

"Don't like Thomson (dunno why, I just don't)"

That precludes a logical answer to your question.

Thanks fellas,

I was thinking of a 31.6mm post for the reasons techjunkie mentioned.

tobycat - Not only is the orginal post heavy no matter how much I tighten it the seat still keeps slipping back.

Jrobe - I like thomson seatposts but I need one with layback and the thomsons with layback are too much on a road bike IMO.

I've had a 31.6mm to 32.4mm shim on order for over 4 weeks now and it still hasnt appeared. I'm not paying the silly amount for the BTP shim. I can't see any shops wanting to ship a shim internationally.

djbowen1 - Getting a 32.4mm seatpost in the UK is nigh on impossible. I've rang so many shops its untrue. Same with the campy record post.

FWIW... the thomson elite setback is LESS than the stock seatpost's setback (see my sig)

That stock FSA post has very poor tilt adjustment... I couldn't get my saddle level with it at all. Thomson Elite FTW!

You could probably just shim whatever you want. Find the post you want, then get the proper shim for it and you should be fine.
