Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road rash queen

This pic has been posted before. I found the account of the accident and ensuing 2+ month hospitalization written by the girl. It has interesting information on how severe road rash is treated.

on a serious note....did you see her 'its been a year' pic? god, i feel so bad for her. shes a beautiful girl, and it looks like shes going to be pretty badly scarred up for life. maybe some plastic surgeon with a penchant for pretty athletic blonde women will have a heart and do some pro-bono work. or was a deal like this mentioned in the article? lol i stopped reading when the kids tackled me. doh!

I'd give her some special ointment. It'd heal that skin right up.

On the serious side, people forget, or don't know, that the epi/dermis is a critical organ; the largest. Lose a substantial amount and you're dead.

It may be from a motorcycle, but it's still interesting. I've been riding both motorcycles and bicycles for several decades and I've gotten much worse road rash from bicycling simply because you can't wear any protection... at least not without overheating in about 12 seconds. I've seen people go down at close to 200mph at the track and because they were wearing a full leather suit, they walked away. On a bicycle, you have nothing, and at speeds of 40+ mph, you can get a nasty rash. Heck, I got a pretty nice one from hitting some gravel in a turn at about 18mph.
