Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shorts, a pain in the .. well you know :)

So The shorts I have been using.. Specialized, Sorry don't know the model, just know they go for about 80.00 had been working fine until I upped my distance from 70 miles to 92 miles with roughly 7000 feet of climbing last week on my long ride . So I was in the saddle for a total of about seven hours of an eight hour ride. Yes I am slow the last 10 miles of the ride my nether regions were so sore that I questioned the wisdom of continuing to ride that day. Of course I pressed on as it was only 10 miles. I was on the edge of being rubbed raw on both sides next to my testicles. I was able by continuing to aplly my "butt cream" able get my self back on a spinning bike a couple days latter. So I am thinking of getting better shorts with a better cameos. I am thinking of the Castilli Cronus. The 160.00 price tag bothers me a bit, but not as much as the other problem bothers me though. Anyone have any experience with these, or any other sugestions?

Regards,
Randy

And Mr. chamois will be making a special cameo appearance in his next pair of shorts.

I have used Castelli Free bibs, which have the the chamois as Cronos, on many long rides/centuries and my butt and nuts love it.

by the way, you can get a Cronos for just 110 on ebay

I just got some Santini twist gel bibs in the mail today - came after I had already left for my ride this morning. About $114 from bicycling hub. They fit and feel fantastic. The gel layer under the chamois is supposed to be great for longer rides and doesn't seem to be too thick. Will report back after tomorrow's ride.

Free bibs huh .. not at the price I saw them at.... Actually the guys at the bike shop talked me into a set of bibs I got some Crafts which seemed to have a decent chamois. They were on clearance so I thought I would give them a try to make sure bibs were the thing for me before I plopped down big bucks for a pair of the Castelli. Those I will definitely be price shopping for! The price was right on the Crafts at 70.00 even if I only end up being able to use them on shorter rides. We will see how it goes tomorrow and this time I will be taking extra cream for a "touch up" along the way The only down side I see so far to the bibs is that the bush breaks will be a little more involved.

Please do let me know how they work out. How long will your ride be?

Resting up from my 92 mile ride yesterday. Tired, but no crotch problems to speak of.. yahoo! The bibs were not the issue I expected them to be with the "bush breaks" So I may break down and get a nicer set after a while. I have a ride in three weeks so I am not going to change anything more until after that ride as everything is pretty much working for me right now.

Regards,
Randy

The Santini's were brilliant. The ride was about 45 miles with lots of hills so I was in and out of the saddle. The chamois didn't budge and it felt great. Boys and butt very happy. The gel absorbed a lot of vibration on the bad roads, but didn't feel too thick. The lycra is not the real thin kind and looks like it will take a lot of wear and tear. I was very impressed as soon as I pulled them on. Definitely the best fit I have had in a long time. I am 5'7", 150lbs, and the medium is perfect for me. Perhaps cut a bit higher in the the front than others I have had, but not a problem.
