Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Century Clothing?

I am doing a century this Sat and just received my new bibs in the mail, unfortunately I won't have a chance to wear them prior to the century. So my question is should I wear them during the century or go with something tried and trued and wait to pull the bibs out? They are Performace Ultra bibs if that makes any difference, and I don't currently have any of these other than the new ones. I would either have a choice of my Voler bibs, which have a slightly thinner chamois, or Performance Elite shorts with a little thicker chamois. TIA!

Go with the tried and true

I did something like this in mid-July when I went out for a metric century with new bibs. They were nice ones -- and guess what... they were Performance Elites. I ended up getting abrasions in places I hadn't encountered these before and was uncomfortable about 10-15 miles into the ride. I soldiered on and finished but wish I would have had some Chamois Butt'r or something like that with me that day. For full disclosure's sake, I enjoy the bibs much more now that they are broken in -- they are actually among the most comfortable ones I own, but I wouldn't jump right out on a century with new ones if I didn't have to. Just my two cents worth.

Tried and true... it's a comfort factor. Wear what you know you'll be comfortable in on a long ride. Try out the new bibs on a shorter ride and then wear them for the next century if they turn out to be comfy.

Stick with the voler's and you should be fine. Make sure to use some chamois lube during the ride though.

I bought some Performance Ultras earlier this year and I love them. I've found them quite comfy for my 50 mile RT commute, metrics, centuries and even the 160 miles of RAIN.

Thanks for the replies! I forgot to mention that I WILL have some Butt'r with me for this ride regardless of the shorts. I did a 60 mile ride at the beach this past weekend with the Volers and noticed about 45 miles in that I could have used some at that point, of course I think part of that was due to the fact of the ride being so flat and being seated more than normal...

I'll give the new bibs some break in rides before taking a long trip with them.

Side question, do the Performance bibs seem to come up higher, the bib itself, than Volers? My Performance seem to be 2-3 inches above my naval where as my Volers seem to be closer to my navel, overall they seem to fit well though...

I would recommend the "fight like you train" theory and not change anything going into new territory.

+1 - and funny you should mention RAIN. 3 years ago I bought a brand new pair of Performance Ultras and put them on for the first time minutes before I rolled up to the start of the RAIN ride.

It was a brutal year and ended up being 160 miles with 9 hours of riding. I was as comfortable as can be expeted. The shorts performed perfectably.

I'd stick with something you've worn before just to be safe....and even those should be well lubed IMO

Never try something new on a long ride. Stick with tried and true clothing, saddles, and nutrition.
I briefly had the desire to try a different energy drink on my last century but came to my senses. Plus, I have a terrible stomach.

I don't know what this 'breaking in' thing is for shorts and bibs. At most, I give em a wash before using for the first time. Of course I'm doing a century this weekend on a brand new B17 too....we don't need no stinkin breakin in...harden the F up!

I really don't subscribe to breaking in new clothes either, but I'd rather have ridden them at least once to make sure they aren't going to starting acting like sandpaper half an hour into the ride.

I have 5 different shorts/bibs right now and I know which ones to wear on a long ride, and which ones to only use for the shorter rides. And which ones keep me in an odd position. And which ones make my butt sore. And which ones curl over at the waist when I bend (not the bibs at least.) They all have their little annoyances.

Shorts do break in. The stretch sometimes starts to give a little more, the padding softens a little.

Go with what you know.

Wear them to work to break them in before your ride.
I was kidding. Don't do this.

I wouldn't wear new shorts on a long ride.

I would rather wear new shorts than my worn out old ones on a ride that long. Do shorts break in?

Yeah, as long as you ingest plenty of baked beans, pizza, hard-boiled eggs and beer.

Well yea! That's the plan on Saturday.....

BTW, I'll be wearing new shorts for the ride. Now I'll have an excuse for all the complaining I plan to do.

i'd also vote for wearing the tried and true. i have a pair of performance ultra bibs and i really like the butt part of the chamois a lot, but the "taint" part of the chamois left me a bit sore on a 52-miler last sunday. i'm also doing my first century on saturday and i'll be leaving the ultras in the drawer and going with another pair that have served me well on 76 and 86-mile rides this summer. i like the ultras, but not as much as another pair i own.

+1 It's one thing to go out for a short ride to test out new stuff, it's another to go out for a 100 & find out there is some issue 25 miles in.
