winner of 8 of the last 9 TDF. Not really seeing the argument for Record. Then again...it does almost have 8oz on D/A but what the TDF guys use as D/A isn't what we buy.

people keep saying that Record is so much better. Funny how the "lesser" group can win the TDF.
With that said, if we are going by what the pros use vs what others use....
I doubt with all Ti bolts that DA is still going to come close to being as light as Record.

Then again, I think Tiagra is underrated.

I completely agree. I had 5000 miles on my tiagra stuff with no hiccups. Only downside is how its still on the 9spd so the compatibility isn't there as much. I wouldn't mind picking up a tiagra cassette for my trainer wheel but since I am running 10spd DA, thats a no go and have to spend the extra 20 bucks for 105.

The number of TDF winners on Shimano probably corresponds exactly to the sponsorship budget of Shimano over Campy.
Apparently the neutral support car bikes had SRAM...

Interesting chart.
This winter I'm going to replace my worn out campy mirage group with either centaur or rival. I'm building or buying new wheels so cog compatibility with my existing hub isn't an issue.
So what would you do? Centaur or Rival?

Buy whichever set makes you happy, they are all good. Then brag about your personal performance achievements/accomplishments, NOT your gear.

If centaur is anything like mirage, it'll fit my hands and shifting styles perfectly AFAIK.
I've heard sram shifting is the bomb -- a buddy of mine who I don't ride with tells me the double tap thing is great for extreme shifts. I tend to shift incrementally, two or three cogs at most or a 2-cog-1-chainring shift.
I dunno. I guess I have to go to my lbs and do a test ride on a sram equipped bike.

Here is a quick one I did with excel with new pricing from PBK. Centaur, Ultegra and Rival seem to be the best bang for the buck for whichever company you choose. I will add shimano 105, sram red and force and other campagnolo groups if I can get up to date prices and weight. Dura Ace also seems very good as it compares to record and even chorus.
Price x Gram (10^6)
Record = 3.102
Chorus = 2.35644
Dura Ace = 2.2562
Ultegra SL = 1.71616
Rival = 1.61424
Ultegra = 1.5609
Centaur = 1.37862

I thought I read somewhere that Rival/Force were going to be reduced in price with the intro of Red, but I'm thinking not now. Although I heard from my LBS that the new SRAM prices are going to be released on Monday.
The problem with the PBK stuff is the selection. The only option for Rival on there is 172.5 + 50/39. I'm looking for a 175 compact crank. Does anyone else have any legit stores (preferably in the USA because of the awesome Canadian dollar right now.. ) with cheap prices for groupsets? Someone (Stray Cat) posted near the start of this thread something about $900 for Force and $550 for Rival (https://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.p...6&postcount=13), but I've never seen those kind of prices around! In fact, Rival seems to be closer to $800 and Force is well over $1000 (ie. similar to the competitivecyclist.com prices).

A convert away from Campy? That would be surprising. Many Campagnolo riders herald their equipment like a Rivendell advertisement gone amok.

My buddy who recently became sram [cough] afficionado converted to sram rival from shimano something, so he doesn't know campy to begin with. What the hell does he know about quality components?

My take on the Campy devotion that we see is this: the vast majority of bikes sold in the USA are Shimano-equipped from the start, so if someone wants Campy, he has to specifically seek it out. Of course there are a few people that chanced on a Campy bike, but most people riding Campy didn't just get it, they sought it out. Thus, there is a greater affinity by most Campy riders to their components than by Shimano riders (some of whom are fiercely loyal, but most of whom just bought a bike with Shimano because it was their) to their respective components.

Weight for 105 - 3156g vs 2678g for DA.
based on https://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?...himano105group
That includes a bunch of extra stuff, so we might be talking about 2750 or so.

Here's my updated numbers... let me know if you see values that need correcting. Prices are based on PBK... if there is another reputable dealer that sells some of these groups cheaper, let me know. I'd like to eventually add the rest of the parts and a way to easily build your own custom group to calculate a custom combination.
