Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic R-Sys

So I went to the Mavic web site last night and was amazed at what I found: the new R-Sys wheels. 1322g; tubular and 1355g; for clincher, IIRC. Now, it surprises me because I thought BFers (hmm, something always seems funny about that abreviation) were on the cutting edge and reported stuff like this, yet I find no records of it in a search.

So without further ado, I present the Mavic R-Sys (I'd post a pic instead of a link but the damn site is flash based and I don't know how to get an image):

https://www.mavic.com/r-sys/

They look great and I like the computer magnet on the front wheel. Nice touch with the way the spokes are. I wonder how easy it is to remove though. I think it slides up and down which means it would require spoke removal, I think.

Sexy wheels. I think they list at $1400 .

Is this the one with straws for spokes. If so, it's been discussed before, I think one of the guys here actually tested them.

I'd love to see the review. I guess this is further proof that the search function sucks.

I'd also love to see any pics, which I'm imagining are in the review.

Well these wheels look nice on the site and in pictures but I must say they are Fugly in person. They were on a Look 585 ultra so that may have something to do with it. I think they would look better on a bike with some yellow on it.

As far as performance the shop guy took them out for a 100 mile test ride. He said they had to tighten all of the spokes on 2 different occassions to make the wheel stiff. After a 1/2 turn or more, he said the wheels were great.

I really didn't think they were much, other than stiff. They don't hold speed for sh*t when you get off the gas. The fat, round spokes just slow the wheels down. The reminded me of the way Spinergy Spox used to dump speed...
To be honest, they actually made my bike ride poorly. If you have an overly stiff bike, these are the wrong wheels to ride. Sure, they are trick and look really cool, but for $1400, you can do lighter, more aero and better rolling.

Boy you guys are bumming me out. I was hoping these were going to be the next Wonder Bread, but I'm only hearing negative: no, no, no (sorry I think I just channeled Lisa Loeb).

Maybe I'll look at the SLs somemore...

The shop I race for is on the Mavic test ride program. They've had a set for about a month. I rode them over the course of a weekend (100+ miles), which was long enough to form an opinion...

The R-Sys is made for climbing. They are very light and stiff. These are not deep dish heavy areo wheels. Yet they do well for most people on the flats. Pick your posion. Unless you spend "real money" it is very hard to have an areo wheel that is light, stiff, and climbs well.

And we all have an extra $1400 (that's not real money?) laying around to spend on wheels that are meant for climbing. As for the climbing, I say BS! They climb well because they are stiff, but the vast majority of people will by them because they are the newest thing from Mavic and they look trick. These same people climb like they are attached to the ground, so the point is moot. They DON"T roll wheel because of the spoke design. My custom WI wheels roll better and are only 50 grams heavier, yet they were 40% of the price.

For $1400, there are several aero, light and stiff wheels out there...! You can get a set of custom Zipps built for $1400 ...

Do the other fibrous spokes out there have the same slowing effect? I'm thinking Spinnergy or Topolino (sp?) or are they not rounded? I haven't seen any in person...

The Spox wheels that Spinergy used to make acted the same way. Topolinos are marginally better than the Mavics.

I would post here about my recent experience with Mavic customer service, but then you'd never buy their pricey wheels, so I won't trash them. Their wheels rock. Their customer support blows.

Several weeks ago I was in a shop in Quebec and the one guy working there at the time had just gotten his. He didn't speak much English, but he was dead keen to show them off. Looked pretty smart and were very light.

Way out of my price range.

I'm surprised that I've not seen any BF commentary on the new Sora; I was quite impressed...

I can get them built for less than $1400, if you really want to split hairs...

I can also get Reynolds DV46 wheels for $600...

Deals are around if you look and aren't afraid to ask for them...

Well, your post said 'we' could. Now if you'll front me the $300 difference I'll gladly concede your point.
