Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seams in shorts causing skin irritation?

I get small sores right at the crease on the inside of my thighs when I ride and I'm begining to think that I'm dealing with a chamois/shorts issue and not a saddle issue. I ride in a PI Microsensor shorts and use a Toupe saddle. I've changed the saddle width to try to alleviate any pressure to the area but I keep getting little sores. I also mountainbike and never have any trouble with sores. When I mountain bike I use Specialized BG shorts and Fizik saddles.

Can seams or changes in chamois material be a problem? The Microsensors have PI's 3D chamois in them with thicker pad changing to a thinner chamois section at the edges. The edges of the chamois aren't stitched flat so I'm wondering if that's what's causing my problem. I'm going to do a few rides in my Specialized shorts and see if the problem persists. If you've had trouble with shorts I'd like to hear what you found when dealing with the problem. Shorts are expensive enough that I'd like to at least hear someone say I'm not totally out of my mind.

Thanks,
Mike

That's probably where this is going. I'm simply hoping that someone can say yes I've heard of problems with seams and stitching or no and you shouldn't be smoking crack while you ride. I'm not positive about the chamois being the problem but if I do a couple of rides in the Specialized shorts without issue the PI's are gone.

1. try some chamois cream.

2. make sure that the chamois is snug (i.e. no jangling).

I have that problem regardless of shorts (some have stitching there, some not), size or shorts (ones that are too big are just uncomfortable. period.), or use of chamois cream, though the cream does help.
I've decided it's my saddle. Not sharp enough taper between seat and nose. If you don't have problems with other shorts, then stick with the brand that works for you.

Definitely try the solutions botto has suggested. If they don't work, though, it is possible that the PI shorts you're using just don't agree very well with your nether regions. This has been the case with me and PI shorts. I've found that Giordana's silverline shorts (https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...163&MODE=&TFC=) are a good substitute in the same general price range, but YMMV. Bibs are a better alternative altogether, but are generally more pricey for the same quality chamois.

I usually ride in Santini, Descente , and PI Attacks. None causes a problem. A pair I wear less often are by Hind. They are comfortable except for the front pad is cut way too low. Don't buy shorts with a low cut in the front. The seam make contact my bit's head. I wiggle about on the saddle to cause my good friend to always point south and all is well.
