Your Sunday Ride (September 23, 2007)
As the cycling season winds down as fall approaches many of us are now beginning to wonder where all the time went. Are you tapering off, starting to dream of football, soccer or even Texas Hold'em, or is it a new beginning? As I go out and ride this morning, probably my last big group of 2007, I am already thinking about next year and what goals I need to accomplish. What I need to change from this year. How will I improve.
Tell us about your ride today, but more than that, tell us what you thought about on today's ride.
Tell us about your ride today, but more than that, tell us what you thought about on today's ride.

Starting all the base type training for next season (first peak in Feb). A 2 hr upper base ride. Other than that, have had a really annoying cold for a couple weeks now. Going to see if I can teach it a lesson!
Goals are pretty general. Above all else, raise overall power (FTP) I guess and let the chips fall where they may. The big debate for me is cat up or just race masters...

After taking Saturday off I was feeling a bit stiff taking off for the Sunday ride with my club and even thought it would be best to cut the ride in half - turn back early. I didn't, however, and paid the price towards the end of what was to be a devastating ride.
I suspected a bit of uphill action and prayed we weren't taking in one of my most hated climbs - Ivinghoe Beacon (though there are lovely views from the top). Instead we went over Gaddesden (a gentler climb) and I managed to stay in contact over the top. The route took a turn onto unknown roads after that and we ended up in Chesham. I was feeling a bit tired by this point and knew I should eat some of my energy bar, but my stomach felt queasy - the warning signs had started.
There were two more big hills after Chesham - one before Great Missenden (2km at 5-7%) and a new nasty killer - Coleshill (1.5km at 10-14%). Me and a couple others were dropped on these, but it was brought back together by the other sides. We then headed back toward London on the motorway with a fast tailwind - speeds were in excess of 50kph. I took a few pulls on the front, but my energy levels were already critical.
On the outskirts of West London I suddenly cracked and came crawling to a very low speed - a paced myself alone for the next 5km. I met up with the group again in Stanmore Park where they had reserved outside tables at a coffee shop. After coffee we headed back towards home - the pace was upped again and three of us immediately dropped back - the strain of the day showing clearly now.
I was very glad to get back home - my legs seemed to have pedalled all by themselves over the last 5-10km - my mind escaping the pain that had taken over my body. A rough day, but I never gave up!
Check out my Motionbased data
My goals for the winter are to stick with this club (almost everyone is better than me) through their base training and put in some extra miles during the week too. I'm due to race for the first time in many years next year, so my late winter/early spring preparations must be up to scratch. Planning a 10-day holiday/training camp in the south of Spain in mid-February and do my first race of the season in the first week of March. That's the plan for now...

I woke up this morning at 6:30 with the intention of going on a nice, long bike ride. I also woke up with an inspiration for the explanation of a very peculiar heat transfer result in a catalytic combustion experiment for a project that I am working on with a colleague. I the experiment the measured heat transfer was about twice what is predicted by conventional (non-reacting) theories. I sat at the kitchen table instead and did the "back of the envelope" kinetic theory calculations that show that my insight is the correct explanation. I'll go out on a ride later.

Did 55 miles through Central NY. Saw many deer, and a fox try and dart in front of another rider. Thoughts? 1. The next few weekends should be awesome for riding-the trees are just starting to turn. 2. No way I'll make it back in time for church with the family. 3. This ride IS church!

I just woke up. I'm meeting my father and brother for coffee at noon. After that, weather permitting, I will embark on the ride that I wanted to do yesterday but didn't have the energy to complete.

Today was spent mostly thinking about what I really want to do next year. Of course there is Mt Mitchell, it will be my second time, but at the same time I was also thinking about how to train with my daughter, she will be doing the Assault on Marion. Our current thinking is to tandem the first 70 miles to Marion, where I will change bikes and ride the remaining 30 miles on my single. Too much to think about. About mile 40 I thought to myself, this has been the easiest 40 miles I have ever done on one of these Sunday rides. I look at Bike Computer 2 and see that we are averaging 19.6 mph, pretty fast for me at that distance on this route. Then I realize I have spent the entire ride on the back of the group, I didn't take one pull at the front, no wonder it was so easy. Anyway didn't seem to matter as miles 51-54 are all uphill, not by much maybe 3-4% grade and I got dropped, so I rode the last 6 miles home by myself.
Totals for today:
Totals for today:
57.55 miles
19.2 avg mph
1662 ft of climb (1.5%+)
1:09 in zone 3, 1:03 in zone 4

Just the usual 100k ride, though we eschewed the hill climbs since we're going to the Seagull Century in Maryland in a couple weeks and it's all flat. We figured we should work on flatlands riding a bit; usually every ride has plenty of hills.
I don't stop riding in the winter. It only gets down to -17C around here, so I keep up the 100k every Sunday.

Rode the Hub on Wheels ride with 4000 other people. Found a friend of mine on the front, so we hammered a bit to see who would say up with us. Great fun flying through those little narrow paths in the park.

100 miles, 4:05.48 ride time, 4:10 with the stop. Flat as a pancake, throughout the rural roads of South Georgia/North Florida. A good time was had by all.

Completed a 56km ride, even nicer day than yesterday with little wind, blue sky, no clouds, strong sun.
As this was my first summer learning all this road bike stuff I'm going to build a training plan for the winter (which will have to move indoors when the weather gets colder).
Still a lot of stuff I need to learn and practice but this summer I proved I could hang with a club for some hard rides, do longer rides (distance and time), improve at climbing, did some small Crit races, etc. My fitness level was already good from years of weight training, but cycling has a whole set of things that need mastering. I managed ok for this summer, but want to improve much more next year.
I plan on seeking out a serious club to ride with for next spring that also does racing (road, Crit and TT).

Well, after fasting all day yesterday (Yom Kippur-the Jewish new year), i decided to start off the year today with the longest ride I've done. I'm almost embarassed to say what it was because you guys are all serious cyclists who have been at it for a while and are built up. But it was 35 miles with about 7 miles of it being some crazy uphill/downhill stuff. I liked it. I rode HARD. I don't have a computer so I can't say how hard I pushed, but that old bike (a 35 year old Puch Brigadier) got to stretch its legs!!!

First my Wednesday ride;
I was rolling around the park on my Bianchi when I got to one of the mini roundabouts and there was a big queue because the car at the front was too scared to come out as they were a learner. I took a second look at them and realised that they were actually a friend of mine from school who left last year and also rides a Bianchi. After the roundabout me and another woman on a Bianchi and passed him. Later I texted him to let him know what i thought of his driving...
Today
In London there was athing called the London Freewheel where some streets were closed to traffic so there was a sort of course you could ride on. So many cyclists took part, I'm not sure how many but it was great fun... kinda like critical mass but without the activism

How were the love bugs? I went out for a 38 mile recovery ride today and I had to stop to clean myself off. There must have been over 100 pairs stuck all over me. They were especially bad on CR 325 between Hawthorne Road and CR 346. Fortunately I didn't eat any of them.

Cotton Century, Greenville NC. Flat as a pancake but 95 degrees. It was hot but at least it was humid.
Season ending? Last year we rode through New Years.
Goals: I would like to be faster. And 15 years younger.

My ride today was called the Two Ferry Metric century along the Connecticut river here in CT. The ride was 65 miles and featured almost 5000 ft of climbing and 2 ferry rides. Then a great barbecue afterwards. Awesome ride
