Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

R600 compact is 105 level?

I just got from PBK some R600 cranks (34/50T) to replace FC-5600 105 cranks (39/50T) on my wife's bike. Here are the weights:

Ultegra 39/53T: 745g
105 39/50T: 755g
R600 34/50T: 850g

The crank arms are labeled Hollowtech II, but they have a groove on the inside and are about 45g heavier on each side. The R600 rings have Ultegra-style step-up rivets so my guess is that shifting should improve (not that she'd really notice), but I'm really surprised at how big a weight difference that is. Nearly a quarter pound!

I've been thinking of getting R700 for my cross bike. Anyone know if it uses the same arms? (105 uses the same as Ultegra) One would think a compact would weigh a bit less given the smaller dimensions but that appears to not be the case.

edit: NM, I found the answer in this parallel thread. The R600 has solid arms, R700 has hollow. The good news for 105 users is that they get the same arms as Ultegra!
