Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Give me a little more stem angle!

I have a stem that brings my bars level with the ground. My head tube is 73 degrees. I want my bars just a few degrees lower than level to improve my aerodynamics. It looks like about -10 degrees. What am I looking for in a stem to give me this drop? Any product recommendations? I have a 120 mm length stem.

are your bars not independent from your stem?

90-73=17

I don't know of any stem with greater than -17 degrees of angle.

Assuming you don't have any spacers, if you need more drop than this, you need another frame.

Look for a track stem. The Deda Pista comes to mind. It's a severe drop though.

The point is, there's a lot out there. I have a 20 deg that came stock on my track bike.

VOILA. -22 deg. Keep in mind that if you want to retain the same reach to the bars (saddle to bar) then you need a shorter or longer stem depending on the angle you select.

UT Dude goes lower with what I believe is a track stem. I know a couple folks who go very low with the Ergostem. You can get lower than horizontal.

So this Deda Pista would get me 5 under horizontal? 73 + 22 = 95? This seems just about perfect.

Exactly, which is why I want to avoid it at all costs. It's close to a POUND.

ITM Millennium 4ever.

I have it on all my bikes. 80/20 angle.
<$100 from most places (universalcycles, for example). Side information: many European pros use this stem (if that kind of thing is important to you).

edit: My 120 mm stems weigh 174g (.. as measured by me).

If your HT angle is 72 deg, then it would yield 4 deg under horizontal. At 120 mm length with -22 deg, your drop from horizontal would be 8.4mm.
