What music do you listen to while riding?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like stuff that gets me a little pissed off. "Next Contender" by Nickelback, for example. It makes me push harder and ride through instead of coasting for a minute to cool off or breathe, like I would if I didn't tap into that adrenaline a little bit.

When I do listen to music, it's only on low-traffic trails, and if I'm coming up on walkers, I'll pause it.

That said, I listen to hard rock (Sevendust, Disturbed, 10 Years, Chevelle, etc.)... the harder the better--gets me moving.

I listen to the humm on my wheels on the pavement and the honk of the car horns. I don't think it is a good idea to place distractions in your ear with nothing between you and the bumper of the passing motorist, but your flesh. I save the MP3 for running, and indoor workouts when I have the luxoury of "zoning out".

As a newer rider, I stick to roads close to home and try to avoid bad roads where I have to hold up traffic. Even so, when I'm on roads without bike lanes, I find the music helps me worry less about the cars and stay in my line. Without the music, I'm nervous and twitchy and I feel like my own nervousness is going to cause me to get hit, almost.

That's probably all in my head, and perhaps my logic is mistaken, but I almost feel like, since I can't stop a car from plowing into me from behind, I'd rather just focus on what's ahead of me and not have to worry about it and be twitchy everytime I hear one approaching.

I'm sure that'll change after a few months of riding, but for right now the music seems to help.

Just started wearing my ipod on the road. I usually only wear the right bud so I can hear oncoming traffic.
When I get to those long country roads I'll pop in the oter bud.

Kraftwerk, Neu!, LoModa, Stereolab, sometimes Jean Sheppard or HST ...

So, you obviously won't drive with music either? I mean, there's nothing between you and other cyclists except THEIR skin, so you wouldn't want the distraction while you're driving. After all, you could kill them by listening to music in your car.

Depends on what I'm doing. For hammering NOTHING beats AC/DC "Whole Lotta Rosie", one of the badest bass tracks ever laid down.

Oh, and ABBA, too.

I only wear the right bud, and I found out that listening music while climbing hills makes it less miserable and it can actually helps me to motivate.
I only listen to Metallica (live stuff) before and while riding.

How is it different from having the windows rolled up and the stereo amped? (rhetorical)

I listen to Jumpstyle, Trance and whatnot when I'm training on rollers or warming up for a race, but once I'm moving I only have songs in my head (usually of the metal variety)

OP - there is no way you can put a thread about music and cycling up without bringing out the best in the Nanny Patrol. Thats one of the tenets of bike forums. That's like having a "rivendell sucks" thread and not having a crazy ABH rant.

Various forms of electronica. Mainly EBM with some futurepop thrown in. Nice fast beats.
Groups like Unter Null to VNV Nation.

At other times it would be something like Radiohead or the yeah yeah yeahs. Plus older modest mouse.

The question, my punk ass friend, is what music I listen to while your mom jacks me off.

And I would say that to your face.
