You won't get helpful answers from Forum members. Those who have brand "A" will suggest brand "A"...folks who got a box of bike parts from Chinocr@pbikesbymail will suggest one of those bikes.
Instead, find out which four or five bike shops are closest to your home. Spend time in each, asking questions, kicking tires, and taking test rides. At a given price point, all of the top brands are very similar in quality. The key to enjoying your bike is that it is precisely your size, is expertly assembled and tuned, with wheels that are perfectly trued by people who care about you and your bike.
So, after two or three visits to each shop in your neighborhood, you will know which folks did the best job of answering your questions and are most serious about helping you get the right road bike. And, that is the shop to buy from, even if their prices are not the lowest. A cheap bike that does not fit and that is not properly assembled will turn out to be very expensive in the end.

Again, someone new who's interested in our sport pops in to ask a question and he's ripped to shreds. We should be helping and encouraging new folks.. that is all. Shaverda, check the under $750 road bike thread (stickied), visit your local bike shops, check out the deals at bikesdirect.com and ibexbikes.com and just lurk around these forums for a few days. You'll get an education. There are more kind, helpful people here than it looks like.
Be sure and check out peoples photos of their saddle sores and tan lines while you are here. We are indeed a high-brow bunch.
