Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zipp care

So I got a beautiful set of 404 clinchers off ebay awhile back and I'm getting them ready to roll.

I read in Zipp's own Maintenance & Care Manual that regular cloth Velox rim tape should not be used (in bold print) on Zipp clinchers b/c of tight tolerances and that style of tape is too thick. Of course they recommend Zipp brand rim tape only, it's thinner...which I am not opposed to buying if it is the right thing to use.

Is this a legit concern or marketing at work? Zipp clincher owners have any thoughts on this.

I did a search and couldn't find anything, will also ask this in the "Fix it" forum.

Hed says the same thing, thin plastic rim tape works well. I have the Rox brand stuff (shops can get it through QBP) and have never had any problems with it. It's also pretty cheap in comparison to Velox as I recall.

Velox makes very narrow tape as well as standard road and mtb widths. I'm sure the narrow stuff would be fine.
