Why are the Ultegra 10sp shifters so not pretty?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why are the Ultegra 10sp shifters so not pretty?

I just got a new bike with Ultegra 10 speed comps, replacing a hodgepodge of 9 speed 105 and Ultegra. And honestly, when I first saw the 10sp brifters, I had to double check to make sure they were in fact Ultegra. My 9speeds are so shinny and expensive looking, and these are just..cheap and plastic-y. What's the deal?

Secretly SRAM shills were hired by Shimano as designers. Shimano had no clue. the SRAM guys have singlehandedly created some of the fugliest parts Shimano has ever sold.

Don't you think your bike deserves SRAM now!

10-spd shimano shifters fit my hands perfectly, like the old Modolo anatomical hoods.

At the touch points(hands, ass, and feet), feel is more important than style.

who cares,
1. they slow you down, ditch them and go back to down tube shifters
2. The guy behind cant see them ,all he can see is you disappearing into the distance
3. yup the look crap in comparison to the duraace but a least they do the same job for less money

Beauty/Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.

I think the finish on those levers looks fine, but as with all STI levers, that bulbous protrusion grosses me out.

i like the new look better, the part where the shift cable went in on the 9speeds looks stupid imo, but the old ones are overall pretty, i just think the new ones are too

oh and at least they are prettier than ur face Rofl

That bulbous protrusion gives me two more hand positions. I'm all for it.

That's odd, my 10sp Ultegras are metal and look like the dura-aces - they're definately not plastic

I don't think that the argument is about them being plastic, but that the brushed and laquered aluminum with the black plastic sides look doesn't appear quite as hot as the more mechanical look of the older offerings. Plus, it's not quite as shiny as DA.

Although Shimano states that the 10 speed shifters are smaller and shorter than the 9 speed version,
but they look so much bigger and bulkier visually.

You could always polish them with that stuff you always see the old men polishing bottom's of soda cans with at every fair or car show you go to.
