Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well I'm still fairly young and ignorant so I'll continue to be angry.

Ah, but I remain faster than 99% of the weenies here. And I have the not-DFL USA Cycling rankings to prove it. Don't forget that. Besides, velocity isn't nearly as crucial as Zen. If you live long enough to hit 50 (doubtful) you may discover that. In the meantime, keep flipping the bird, and perhaps we can read about you on page 12 of the Podunk Journal some day. Somebody will post a link to the article describing your tragic murder right here for another BF hand-wringing session.

Years ago a friend and I were walking through a Washington DC neighborhood when this angry sounding guy started calling us names from the top floor of a 3 or 4 story building. I was going to ignore him, but my friend just waved and yelled back No habla Englais! and then he laughed and the guy in the window laughed and called us a few more names and all was well. That has nothing to do with riding a bike, but it does demonstrate how a friendly non-combative attitude will sometimes deflect the anger of a lunatic.

Nice try. Euguene was a former NYS Assemblyman.

Really, that should crack my pal John up. We really thought it was a gag.

I ride past Deer Mtn. Day Camp on many Saturdays. I start @ the Tuxedo Park/Ride by Rt. 17, ride up over into Harriman, down Gate Hill Road, down Calls Hollow, through Monsey to Bergen Cty, do the Park Ridge shop ride and then go back, about 75-80 miles, lots of climbing. My daughter went to Deer Mtn. Day Camp one summer a few years back. That's about 25 miles from here (we're in Chester)

Half-right, IMHO. This is the kind of civil incident that we have cops and the law for. When those yo yos swerved the car at you the driver could have been charged with reckless endangerment - a felony in NY. If they had stopped to threaten you your civil case would have included the others. The driver would be a felon - unable to get a job or a loan forever. The people in the car would have to write you a big check.

If you let it go, there will be nothing to stop them from doing that to the next person. Is that 'Zen' or 'irresponsible?'

Ahhh, the Park Ridge Shop. Bought my hybrid Giant Innova there 15 years ago and still ride it. Haven't been back to the shop since I moved way upstate. Finally upgraded to a road bike this past summer.

Brave man biking thru Monsey on Saturdays. Must get some dirty looks from the locals.

Are you kidding? Safest friggin place/time to ride on the planet. The Hasidics don't drive cars on Saturday. There is zero point zero traffic. And plenty of bike racing types ride through there going to/from Harriman. They're used to it. Actually I've had some interaction with them, and they're generally either standoffish or very cordial. But they'd never harrass you. No problems whatsoever.

I usually wave and smile at angry motorists who expect an angry response from me. Try it out guys, I guarantee it'll piss off the motorist.

We have some of the worst traffic on the country around where I live and I have very rarely encountered pissed off motorists - maybe one or two in the last four years. Most folks just want to get by/around me as fast as possible to get wherever they want to go. Hey, no problems here - I do the same.

Wow Pcad. I thought your "old" skin was thick enough that it could withstand a little chain pulling. Didn't realize I'd pull you right off your zen pedestal and into such a dark response! I figured you would see through the sarcasm and realize that you and I are on the same page regarding bike/car confrontation...

Now, let's hope this non-bird-flipping roadie DOES live to and past 50. I'm not the type to invite murderous rage anyhow. Oh yeah, and is CO "podunk" to you??

There's truth to this. In heavily crowded areas I seem to seldom have any problems. It's on the country roads where the drivers get some time to see you and prepare a response that seems to cause the problem.

Problem is most cyclist don't involve the law when they respond to nutbag drivers. They simply react angrily and invite the confrontation. So instead of any encouraging any real discipline for the drivers (ie legal ramification), the angry reactive cyclist reinforces the idea that cyclists are actually impotent and worthy of confrontation/abuse. The driver believes that cyclists ARE jerks and therefore they treat every future cyclist accordingly. Creating an environment that justifies driver/cyclist confrontations only encourages that kind of behavior from BOTH sides. THAT is irresponsible. A much better tact is to quietly smile and reach for the cell phone to dial 911 with the license plate #. Assuming of course that the driver is endangering the safety of cyclists.

haven't read any of the replies so far. no need.

a smile & a wave, is the only response necessary to the idiots on the road.

nothing confuses an idiot in a car as much as that.

Actually, where I live it's rather rural, I'm about 55 miles from Manhattan so i doubt you have better roads. But better scenery you certainly have, better mountains, MUCH better skiing. But it's podunk. Hey, I live in podunk myself. But when Manhattan is only an hour away you can't get too podunked.

If I lived within 2 hours of the powder skiing you have there my winter cycling career would be OVER dude. I'd be on fat skis between December and April for the rest of my pathetic life. I've been out to the Rockies about 10x for 10 day vacations and it wrecks northeastern skiing for you. Had some pretty awesome powder days in places like Aspen, Grand Targhee and Alta.

We have cows, llamas and camels by me by the way. Friggin camels. You're riding along, expecting a field full of cows, and they have 25 camels. It's a farm that rents them out for NY film/tv productions near here.

Directions to Eugene Levy park... in case anyone ask again.

Take Route 17 North or Garden State Parkway North to NYS Thruway South (87 South/287 East) to Exit 13N, Take Palisades Parkway North to Exit 12. Make a Left at the end of the ramp and go to Light. Make a left onto Route 45 South go through 3 lights. The park will be on the left, go into the second entrance (Herb Reisman Sports Complex) the field is up the hill on the left.
