Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

HRM and Lights

I am planning on getting a HRM for both running and biking. What is a good brand to go with? I have a Cateye computer on my bike. I was thinking of getting a cateye HRM.

Which one should I get, I would like to spend around 100 bucks on it but I want quality that will show accurate results.

I rode my bike for the first time in the dark, its pretty scary. Im worried about cars and other people not seeing me.

What is a decent light set?

it depends on if you want to see or just be seen. i spent about thirty bucks on a cateye set (rear and front light) and i'm quite happy with it. both are LED so the headlight provides very limited vision, but at least i don't have to worry about getting macked by a car or something. or course the possibilities are endless depending on how much you want to shell out...

Hell, while you're at it ask what the best chain lube and maintenance schedule is, and don't forget the whole Shimano/Campy thing.

Lighting threads are like crack for nerds.

I recently bought a Sigma BC-2006 computer. It comes with two backs. When you switch the backs, the display changes. Both displays feature HRM. One is more appropriate for running while the other is appropriate for cycling. The battery in the chest strap can be changed by the user. There is no need to send it back to the factory. Sigma has a very good reputation for quality products. The cost is just a little over $100. I got a good deal through Nashbar by way of Amazon.com.

I frequently ride in a rural area at night. The first mile or so to get there is on city streets. My headlight is a 3 LED flashlight. It lights enough pathway ahead of me that I can avoid obstacles. My taillight is a Bell flashing LED unit from Wal-Mart that cost less than $10. A friend came upon me in his truck one night without knowing who was on the bike. When we figured out I was on the bike, he told me he saw me half of a mile before he got to me.

You can get a simple timex or polar hrm watch for ~50. Most features on HRMs are unnecessary. Zone alarms, time in zones, avg bpm in each zone...All you really need is to know your current and average which all the basic ones do.
Campmor has great deals on timex hrms. I used two different models for roughly five years of 5-6 day a week running and was very satisfied with them before upgrading to a Garmin forerunner 305.

Plenty of lights on sale at Nashbar and Performance and plenty of threads in the lighting forum about them.
