Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacing Cassette

Are you guys a big fan of climbing ? I'm not .. my bike has the stock 12-25 10 speed and most of the guys in our group rides compact crankset. My question is does it make a lot difference if I change my cassette to 12-27 ? Does anybody here ever made that change ? and I'm also thinking of changing the whole entire crankset to a compact. Any advice will be big help. Thank You

My groupset comes with 11-23 cassette (WTF?), I changed it to 13-26 after a few weeks. That was a pretty noticeable change.

But to answer your question, I don't think it will make a big difference switching from 12- 25 to 12-27.

I think 12-25 makes a little difference, but it mostly will be in your head. Now go to a compact and a 12-27 and you can climb all day, but a 12-25 with a compact chainring and you'll be very happy.

I have an 11/28 on one set of my wheels I use when I got to hilly terrain. You can climb about anything with that cassette.

Do you use your 39-25 combination often?

I'm usually pretty happy w/ 34x25 which is slightly easier than 39x27 which is what I used to ride. I'm a little heavy as cyclists go (6' at 185-190lbs). I imagine that at 20-30lbs lighter I'd feel like I could climb walls w/ that sort of gearing.

i've heard (from a friend, not the internet) that yes, it's a pretty noticable change. Much cheaper than going compact as well.

You know, I recently switched from a 11-23 to a 12-25 and I definitely noticed the difference. I agree with some of these other guys: switch the cassette out, and if you find your gearing still isn't as low as you'd like, then think about a new crank. You may, however, find that a 27 tooth cog is adequate, and you'll have saved yourself the few-hundred bucks you'd have paid for a new crank.

27 is 8% lower than 25. So, if you were turning at 80 RPM, you'd now be turning at 86 RPM.

So, it's not a major difference, but it is noticeable.
